I am planning on experimenting with filtering my fry tubs this year. So far I've left them unfiltered and done water changes every 12 hours and this has worked for the first month. However, as the bioload increases culling is necessary to keep the water quality up. I hope a cycled sponge filter (or boxfilter with purigen) will extend the time before a cull is necessary. Two things I've learned 1) you don't always have time to cull when you need to, life gets in the way. 2) some breeds and I would say most breeds benefit from delayed culling. I didn't feel satisfied after a day culling my SVR last year. It just takes longer for the top line to develop. I don't plan on always using the filter. It's just there, ready to throw in the instant water quality is decreasing to fast in that 12 hour window between water changes. On the left is an aquarium coop sponge filter. Nothing ground breaking there. In the middle is the swiss tropicals block filter with jet lifter. Yes, they are pricey but so far I'm really impressed with the jet lifter uptake tube. On the right is a jehmco box filter filled with purigen.
