The hands have to relax so they can absorb and control the ball before redirecting. Think of setting like a sling shot. Absorb ➡️ store ➡️ release. The wrists don’t create the power they finish the movement and energy transfer with late acceleration once everything’s moving. Setters being offensive! Let’s talk about it! ⬇️ Setters absolutely need the ability to keep the opposing team’s defense disciplined! How do we do that? By being an offensive threat! Here are 7 different ways to do that: 1. Standing club dump: mostly when you are back row, keeps your below the plane of the net and won’t get called for a back row attack. 2. Jumping club dump : if you are shorter, you can still do this one backrow (as long as you don’t break the plane of the net). A way to keep them honest from a step off the net 3. Power throw: use that left hand to throw down in front of you. Not a side to side motion but more in front where your power is. KEEP YOUR RIGHT HAND UP, if you drop it early, the block knows exactly what’s coming! 4. Backwards tip: turn your right hand in and finesse shot over to the sideline behind you! (Tip for this one: know where your opposing outside is so they don’t throw it back in your face!) 5. Pineapple: deep corner throw with your left hand! Up and over the libero but in the corner enough the middle back can’t run it down. This one is VERY situational! 6. Left handed swing (lol): most of us aren’t lefty’s (me) however it’s a good one to have under your belt if needed. Keeps a block honest even if it doesn’t score! 7. Right handed swing: VERYYY situational! Not super sneaky but if it’s there - take it! Dumping is SUCH a significant part of a good setters skill set! However it’s super important to know when to utilize this and which method to go with! It’s OKAY to take a perfect pass to yourself once in a while if it will throw off the defense and give your hitters more gaps in the block throughout the game! Even if you don’t know how to set or play volleyball at all, this is a great drill to start. This drill forces you to set the ball high enough so that you can get underneath it every time, and helps you with ball control. ✅ use your forehead as the guide ✅ bend all your joints to get below the ball ✅ snap your wrists and extend your arms straight ✅ finish with your palms facing in front of your target Let the ball bounce in between every set and see how many you can get with your teammate in a row!
