The importance of testers. That “perfect” colour in store can look completely different once it’s on your walls..and the reason is simple: lighting. Natural daylight. Grey afternoon skies. Warm evening lamps. Spotlights. Shadows. They all shift tone, depth and warmth. Before you commit, paint your testers onto some blank sheets (ideally no smaller than a3). Place them around the room, different walls, near windows, beside lamps, and leave there for 24 hours. Watch how the colour behaves in morning light, midday brightness and evening glow. A colour you loved at 11am might feel too cool at 7pm. Or too dark in a north-facing corner. It’s the simplest step, and the one that saves the biggest regret.

I want to gently challenge the word dark, especially when it comes to paint colours. Dark feels heavy. It feels risky. And it feels like something that might go wrong. But I’m here to tell you that if you replace that word with Rich, it starts to feel a whole lot different. When we say dark, we focus on what we’re losing – light. When we say Rich, we focus on what we’re gaining-atmosphere. So I’ll leave you with two questions. 1. Where could you add more atmosphere into your home? 2.
