Even colours that look completely neutral on the paint chart. Take Farrow & Ball Shadow White for example in this clip ~ It’s a calm, soft neutral but it actually carries a subtle red undertone, which is what gives it warmth and softness once it’s on the wall. And this is exactly why the same paint colour can look beautiful in one house and completely wrong in another. Undertones interact with: • the direction of light • flooring and furniture • surrounding colours So when someone says “this is the perfect neutral paint” what they really mean is: it worked in their home. Tip (something I get asked a lot!) - if you’re trying to move away from grey interiors but can’t replace everything, undertones become even more important. A lot of homes still have grey sofas, grey carpets, grey kitchens, cool toned tiles ~ and if you can’t afford to change these and this is your starting point, avoid neutrals with cool undertones like: • blue • violet • cool grey These can make the whole room feel cold and flat. Instead, look for neutrals with warmer undertones, like: • soft red • beige • taupe • muted warmth These colours soften grey and help the room feel warmer and more balanced without needing to replace everything.
