Another gorgeous, but very dirty, fleece in progress. Cora is a CVM mixed with a little Finn, and this spring will be her first shearing, so exactly what her wool will be like to work with is still a bit of a mystery. Any guesses on the true fleece color under all that dirt?π

This Scottish Blackface ram missed his shearing last year. His wool was very felted and hard to shear off. It took me six minutes to shear him so I edited the video down a bit. Iβm sure he feels much better π #sheep #shearing #farmlife #relief #animalwelfare

Sheep do not shed their coats, but instead need to be sheared every year. Gently cutting away the wool with hand shears, like these, allow the sheep to continue living healthy & happy lives. π€ πΉ + π: @cedarhillfiberfarm #relaxing #satisfying #shearing #sheep #grooming

This is a second shearing on a black Leicester Long Wool sheep. Long wool breeds can call for twice a year shearing depending on their location. Here in Texas, itβs very difficult to get a beautiful 12 month fleece off of these guys. After about 10 months they begin to itch, matting their fiber. This is hard on the sheep and ruins the fleece. For their comfort, we shear every 6 months π€π» the difference in color at the tips is a result of sun bleaching.

Wool blindness is defined by the growth of wool over the eyes. This causes the animal to have to navigate terrain without eyesight and become more vulnerable to predation. With fuzzy faced sheep, often once a year is not enough to keep wool blind at bay. In large, commercial operations, ranches will have a shearing team come during the year between shearing to βWig and Crutchβ their herds. Removing the dirty wool around the rump and taking off the topknots. If looking into starting your own heard, keep this in mind while choosing the breed. If you are not comfortable handling the animals with shears or scissors by itβs eyes, consider an open faced breeds. Keep in mind that there can be several variations of breeds. Southdowns, like the one in this video, come in open faced or shaggy bloodlines. You can tell best what your animal will likely turn out to be based off the parents so itβs always encouraged to ask to see the rest of the herd. Remember, the animals we are in charge of rely solely on our care and shearers often only come once a year. Wool around the eyes can collect debris causing eye infections like seen in one of my previous videos. #shearingiscaring
