Instead of removing sod, we often prepare new planting areas by sheet mulching - layering cardboard and woodchips to smother grass and weeds naturally. Over time, these layers break down, building rich, healthy soil for new plantings. To speed up this process, we often inoculate the wood chips with wine cap mushroom spawn, letting the mycelium accelerate the decomposition while also producing delicious edible mushrooms. 🍄 This project features locally recycled cardboard sheets and wood chip mulch from a silver maple that once stood right here. The tree was unhealthy and becoming a hazard, so now it’s giving back to the landscape in a new way. Next up is a full landscape installation focused on restoring the tree canopy with a tulip poplar, adding a woodland understory of native plantings including serviceberry, viburnum, fothergilla, and carolina allspice, and creating a sunny pollinator meadow to support biodiversity throughout the seasons. . . . #ecologicallandscaping #pollinatorgarden #sheetmulching #nativehabitat #nashvillefoodscapes

🌱Want to turn your lawn into a biodiverse native plant haven? Start with sheet mulching. Instead of fighting nature, this method works with it. No tilling, no chemicals, no ripping up sod. Just layers of cardboard, compost, and mulch that turn a patch of lawn into a thriving ecosystem. Think: less grass, more butterflies. Less maintenance, more meaning. Here’s what happens when you sheet mulch: 👉 Your soil gets healthier. 👉 Rainwater soaks in instead of running off. 👉 You create a space for native plants, pollinators, and LIFE. It’s the first step to transforming your yard into something wildly more beautiful than a lawn: *an actual living, breathing habitat.* You don’t need to know all the science. You just need a little cardboard and a willingness to try something new. 💪✨ You in? The image outlines a "No-Dig" or "Sheet Mulching" gardening method. This technique allows you to create new garden beds directly over grass or weeds without digging them out. The 4-Step Process Flatten and Lay Cardboard: Place plain, brown cardboard directly over mowed grass or weeds. Overlap the edges by at least 6 inches (15 cm) to ensure no light reaches the vegetation beneath. Soak Thoroughly: Drench the cardboard with water. This helps it conform to the ground, jumpstarts decomposition, and ensures it doesn't blow away. Layer Compost: Pile 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) of good-quality compost on top of the wet cardboard. Spring Result: By spring, the cardboard will have started to break down into "worm food," and the grass underneath will have died. You can then plant seeds or seedlings directly into the compost layer. Pros and Cons Pros ConsLess Labor: Eliminates the need for heavy digging, tilling, or turf removal.Material Cost: Can be expensive if you need to buy large amounts of compost.Weed Suppression: Smothers existing weeds and prevents new seeds from germinating.Initial Growth: Some plants may struggle in the first year until the cardboard fully breaks down.Soil Health: Improves soil structure, preserves natural drainage, and attracts earthworms.Oxygen Barrier: Thick cardboard can occasionally restrict oxygen and water flow to the soil. Safety Tips for Cardboard Remove Contaminants: Always strip away all plastic tape, mailing labels, and metal staples, as these do not biodegrade. Avoid Glossy Material: Only use plain brown corrugated cardboard. Avoid white, colored, or shiny/waxed boxes, as they may contain heavy metals, plastic coatings, or PFAS ("forever chemicals"). Ink Safety: Most black ink on plain brown cardboard is soy-based and safe for gardening. Would you like to know which specific vegetables grow best using this no-dig method during the first season?

Sheet Mulching is one of my favorite ways to turn lawn into a new garden bed. A layer of cardboard topped with wood chips or compost or soil smothers the grass and lets you transform the space. HOWEVER, sheet mulching is not perfect and you may have bits of grass come through as the cardboard degrades. Additionally, really vigorous grasses and weeds like Bermuda which spread via runners underground can make sheet mulching less effective. I still find sheet mulching to be wonderful and use it all the time. I don’t mind pulling some clumps of persistent grass every so often. #sheetmulch #sheetmulching #sheetmulchyourlawn #sheetmulchingismagical #gardening #zone8a

If you want to transform an area of your garden into a more productive patch, then use the powerhouse combo of cardboard and woodchips to smother grass and weeds. Detailed sheet mulching steps are in my book ‘The Compost Coach’. Pre-order via the link in my bio. I can’t wait for you to read it. 🤎   Here’s an edited extract from my book- “Sheet mulching is especially beneficial to use around fruit trees – if grass is growing right up to their trunks, then it will be stealing water and nutrients from the trees. Over time, the cardboard and wood-chips will prevent photosynthesis from occurring, and weaken and eventually kill the plants underneath. Invasive weeds will still sneak back in, so you’ll need to proactively hand-pull them.” “Once the cardboard has broken down in your sheet-mulched bed, grow a green manure crop that will outcompete weeds and feed your soil.” Drop me a 🌱in the comments if you want me to send you a reel about how to grow green manure & why it’s so good for your soil.

Digging disrupts healthy soil structure. Stripping away sod
12,998

Digging disrupts healthy soil structure. Stripping away sod is removing the most organic-rich layer. That's fine if your only goal is to mulch, but if you're going to plant, you'll almost always need to buy and haul in topsoil to replace what you just threw away because you end up with compacted lower layers of soil that don't allow root and water penetration, as well as an exposed seed bank of dormant weeds that now have light to germinate and take over. Consider these methods instead: Sheet Mulching: Kills the grass and builds soil simultaneously. My favorite method. No plastic needed. Plant right in it after weeks of decomposition. Occultation: A black silage tarp blocks all light. It’s a waiting game, but it’s effective for large areas. Tarp is removed and can be reused. Solarization: Clear plastic traps heat. This literally cooks the weeds and seeds underneath (best for peak summer). Plastic is removed. Both occultation and solarization cause some harm to soil microbes, but they tend to bounce back with a thin layer of compost after. Want to keep the lawn look? There's also overseeding a lawn with lower maintenance clover or buffalograss. Which method is best for you depends on timing, cost, location, and temperature. The upcoming guide book will cover all of these. Sign up at link in bio so you dont miss it. #gardening #lawnremoval #rewilding #plants #gardendesign

This man makes garden dreams come true one pro bono project at a time. We can look back on these projects one day and think, "Wow, we were so strong and capable back then." Thank you for being so selfless, my love 💕💪 We created an entire new no dig planting bed using the #sheetmulching method. We topped off our cardboard layer with the @coastofmaineorganic Cobscook garden soil before adding all of our plants. We also disguised an eyesore in our backyard. Hint, it's hidden in this new bed. Tilling is a breakup. Sheet mulching is a long-term relation

Tilling is a breakup. Sheet mulching is a long-term relationship. 📦🌿 Most people spend their weekends fighting weeds. I spend mine feeding the soil and letting the cardboard do the heavy lifting for me. In permaculture, we call this Sheet Mulching (or “Lasagna Gardening”). Here’s why it’s a total game-changer: ✅ It kills weeds and growth naturally: No sprays, no back-breaking digging. Just block the light, and nature does the rest. We’re not breaking up the beneficial fungi and microbes in the soil, not releasing carbon, nor breaking weeds into bits that can just regenerate. ✅ It feeds the worms: Cardboard is essentially “worm candy.” As it breaks down, it invites life back into the dirt. Plus it adds organic matter to the soil. ✅ It holds moisture: It acts like a giant sponge, meaning you water way less in the summer. 👏🏻 Make sure you remove all the plastic tape and glued tabs from the boxes first! Your soil microbes love carbon, but they aren’t big fans of shipping tape. 👏🏻 Layer thick! I do 3 to 6 layers of cardboard, especially if choking out mugwort and other stubborn growth. The thicker, the longer it takes to break down, depriving that greenery of sunlight. ⚠️ Worried about PFAS? Forever chemicals aren’t typically found in ordinary shipping boxes, rather food container boxes with grease-proof linings and varnishes. Most boxes today are printed with soy- and vegetable-based inks (I’m a graphic and package designer by trade). Skip boxes flooded with ink and varnish, remove glue tabs, and sticky labels, and avoid food containers. Have you tried the cardboard method yet, or are you still a “tiller”? Let’s talk about it! 👇 #nodig #permaculturehacks #gardeningtips #soilregeneration #sustainablefarming

This isn’t my first time sheet mulching 🤎🌻 I actually love this method. It’s so much easier, no digging, no tilling… and I don’t have to stress about weeds and grass taking over my flower beds later. This is my second year growing sunflowers in this spot, so it’s officially time to get this bed ready again 🙌 Here’s what I did: • Laid down cardboard to block out weeds • Soaked it really well with water • Added a thick layer of soil/compost on top • Smoothed it out and now it’s ready for seeds 🌱 Why I keep coming back to sheet mulching: ✨ Suppresses weeds naturally ✨ Builds healthier soil as it breaks down ✨ Holds moisture (which we definitely need) ✨ Encourages worms and good microbes ✨ Saves my back from all that digging Round two of sunflowers… let’s grow 🌻 #SheetMulching #SunflowerSeason #GardenPrep #GrowYourOwnFlowers #HomesteadVibes
