Landscape fabric under mulch sounds like a good idea… but it usually causes more problems later. Mulch breaks down into soil, weeds grow on top, and their roots end up tangled in the fabric. Proper bed prep and mulch maintenance is the better long-term solution. #landscaping #mulch #landscapetips #contractorlife #candclandsolutions

Garden compost made last autumn and turned into this bay in January has been nicely colonized by worms, Eisenia fetida small red worms which eat organic matter, and this is their excretions. It would be amazing to use as a mulch on beds, and in that case, I would not sieve it. Or after sieving it’s superb for potting, which we are trialling with 30% coir to lighten it because it can be too dense in pots and module cells. #wormcastings @ads.wood #compost #gardencompost #nodig #eiseniafetida #mulch

This summer we planted approximately 1000 Globe Artichoke plants on just over a half an acre. Before we planted them we mulched the ground with a lovely blanket of 15-20cm thick of hay which we had cut in June. This settled to around 10-12cm after a couple of weeks. Globe Artichoke is a perennial crop so this year has been all about getting the plants established and making sure they have a healthy root system. We are growing a variety called “Imperial Star” and although we were too late planting this year to get a harvest, we are looking forward to having them available for 2025. There are a number of benefits we have found to the deep mulch system: Weed Suppression A thick layer of hay mulch effectively blocks sunlight, preventing weed seeds from germinating. This reduces the time needed for weeding. Moisture Retention Hay mulch helps retain moisture in the soil by reducing evaporation. This is particularly beneficial in dry climates or during periods of drought, as it lessens the need for frequent watering. We have not had to water these plants once since they were planted. Microbial Feed/Biodiversity Encouragement The presence of hay mulch creates a habitat for beneficial insects and microorganisms. Take the worm for example; Worms primarily work at night, avoiding the sun and predators. In the darkness under the mulch, they come to the soil’s surface to feed, which helps in aerating the soil. As worms consume organic matter, they break it down and transport it into the soil. This action not only enriches the soil with nutrients but also boosts its structure. Prevents Compaction Mulching with hay reduces the impact of rain on the soil surface, decreasing compaction and allowing roots to penetrate more easily. Wind Protection In the early stages of plants life, just after it has been transplanted, it especially susceptible to wind damage or worse the main stem being snapped. Having a small wind break around the plant like the mulch allow it to establish and grow strong with constantly being whipped and blown by wind. #corkrooftopfarm #mulch #organic #artichoke #worms #soillife #soil #soilhealth #planthealth #urbanfarm #horticulture #farming #cork

Scam alert‼️ I cannot believe this stuff is sold as “weed control.” It does not do that at all. It’s so amazing how the industry has managed to convince so many people that this is a necessary part of landscaping. It’s literal garbage in your yard.😭 I saw this in a store the other day and want to try to get out ahead of this for spring garden planning. Don’t use it and don’t let anyone try to convince you that it’s necessary. I see this stuff in clients’ yards all the time and it can be a real mess. Not all “fabric” is the same but the end result is NOT no weeds. It’s often a tangled mass of roots and plastic, the soil is in terrible shape and so are the plants. It’s hard to dig into it to put new plants in and there are lots of weeds. Abject failure. Avoid it unless you are working with stone. This can include paths but guess what—you’re still going to have weeds. Alternatives: 1. Mulch, including wood chips, both of which will break down over time and offer nutrients to your plants. I suggest at least 2”-3”. Weed BEFORE putting mulch down if you can because most of them can come up right through it if they’re already there. 2. “Living” mulch (plants). There are limited places for weed seeds to land and germinate you won’t have a lot of weeds. This can take a long time to establish but worth the investment 3. Some people put down cardboard and then mulch, to extend the effectiveness of that. (Don’t use cardboard with shiny, colorful coating because it can have chemicals in it. This is also not great for your soil but it’s much better than fabric.) Have you toiled with this stuff? Ugh!!!😑 About me: I am a garden coach and consultant and I meet with people in person around the Boston area and virtually everywhere.
