How I style shelves, step by step 1. Start with the big things—like art. I place 1–2 pieces on each shelf, making sure there’s balance and room to breathe. 2. Then layer in books—some stacked, some upright. No need to color-coordinate unless you want to. 3. Take a step back and adjust. Make sure it feels balanced, not too cluttered, and that your eye has a place to rest. 4. Last, add personality—your collected trinkets, little treasures, the pieces that make it yours. Shelf styling made easy-ish. Truthfully I think shelves are one of the hardest things to style so first and foremost, give yourself some grace. Adding a few extra tidbits for you: - start with a colour palette - pick 2-3 colours and repeat them. It’s what makes everything feel intentional instead of random - go big, not many - a few oversized pieces beat a bunch of small ones every time. too many little items = visual clutter - vary your heights - mix tall, medium, and short. stack books horizontally to create a riser for smaller pieces - layer in texture - wood, glass, woven, ceramic. the mix is what makes it look expensive - lean art at the back - propping a frame behind your accessories adds depth without any extra effort - edit ruthlessly - if it looks just as good with less, go with less. breathing room is part of the design.
