🦈Let’s find shark teeth on #Amelia Island!🏝️ *The best beaches to find teeth on Amelia Island are Main Beach, the north beach accesses or Fort Clinch. *look in shell beds or the tide line (outgoing tide is preferred) *look for small dark triangles, shark teeth are typically black. *Size: some are teeny tiny (smaller than a pea) and some can be almost the size of your hand, most of the ones I find are the size of the ones in the video *Type: there are many types of shark teeth you can find. There are shark tooth identification guides online or you can pick one up at the welcome center on Centre Street downtown. Is it a tooth? It is if it is sharp or has serrations on one side and has a gum line (although they can be partly or sometimes completely broken off). If it seems brittle like you can break it, it is usually not a tooth. Shark teeth are very strong! Have you found any shark teeth?

Walking out onto the beach and seeing my favorite crunchy sand and rubble had made a comeback to this spot! 🙌🏽 The beaches change constantly with the waves, tides, seasons, currents, etc, so I never know when this will happen. My easy tips for REALLY finding the best shells are below! DO: Go to a real shell beach. Marco Island and Sanibel Island are among the best. Read up on the top shell beaches and go to them. Don’t waste your time on lesser beaches, you won’t find much. DO: Go in the morning. Sunrise to noon is the best time slot. The hour after sunrise is the absolute best because not many people have been there yet, and the low angle of the sun makes it easy to spot good shells. DO: Sit or crawl, don’t walk or stoop over. Get down close and move slowly. Some of the most amazing shells I found were discovered when following right behind someone else who missed them! DO: Go at all tide levels. Low tide is rumored to be the best, but I found that searching close to the water line and wet sand was always productive, regardless of tide level. DO: Move around! Hit multiple beaches in the same area in one day. Surprisingly, one beach may not have much, but another beach a mile away is a gold mine. The hot beaches in an area can change day to day. DO: Go every morning! The sea delivers new gifts every day. Not just more shells every morning, but different types, as well. For days it was hard to find any urchins, for example, but then one day there were thousands! DO: Go near sunset. Just like sunrise, the low angle of the sun makes it easy to spot good shells. DON’T: Go between noon and 4:00. The beach is too picked over by this time, and many people are there competing to find the goodies. Also, the high sun makes it hard to spot good shells among the piles. DON’T: Look at night with a flashlight. I tried it a few times. It’s really hard to spot good shells unless they are really big ones. But the “pros” are out doing this too, and unless you get there first, you won’t find any. What do you think? Agree? Disagree? We’ve all heard of South Padre, but have you heard of Padre Island National Seashore? One word: PERFECTION. Who doesn’t want 70 MILES of sand and shell beaches? It’s the world’s longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island - solitude baby! It’s my favorite spot on the coast, located just south of Corpus Christi. With that solitude comes a few challenges worth mentioning. Making it past the first 5-10 miles requires 4 wheel drive; so if you’re cruising mini-van style you’d better stick closer to the entrance. No bathrooms - we usually bring an inexpensive porta-potty (or pee in the brush on the dunes). But there is a beautiful visitor center near the entrance too! It’s stunning, but if this sounds too tricky, then stick with the close by Mustang Island State Park where amenities flourish. Get those summer vibes rollin’ Texas! Pro Tip: Take the ferry across further south to see tons of dolphins, plus you miss the traffic near Corpus Christi!
