Have you ever seen a Yakougai be de-shelled for eating? 🐚🤷🏽‍♂️ Yakougai (夜光貝), or great green turban shell (Turbo marmoratus), is a large sea snail found in warm waters around southern Japan, especially Amami Oshima. Known for its beautiful mother-of-pearl shell, it’s used in crafts and jewelry. Its meat is considered a delicacy-firm, slightly sweet, and often served as sashimi or grilled. Preparing yakougai takes skill, as the shell is extremely hard and can damage knives if mishandled. Pufferfish don't have individual strong teeth; instead, they have four plates of dental material that are fused into a strong, beak-like structure, which is continuously growing and used to crack open hard-shelled prey like clams, mussels, and crustaceans. Sea otters are known for their clever use of tools, and they often carry around rocks for several practical reasons. One of the main uses is for breaking open hard-shelled prey like clams, mussels, and sea urchins. They'll use the rock as a tool while floating on their backs, smashing the shells against it to access the soft meat inside. Additionally, sea otters have a loose patch of skin under their forearms that serves as a sort of pocket. In these pockets, they can store their favorite rocks as well as food collected during foraging dives. Its jaws close with shocking speed, especially considering its size, making escape nearly impossible for any animal caught in its grip.
