Clearing Up the Truth About Fish 🐟 and Shellfish 🦐 Allergies! Tom Chacko from Chacko Allergy here! Saw a post about someone reacting to seafood — let's clear up a few myths: ✅ Fish and shellfish are two different families. Allergic to shrimp? Doesn't automatically mean you're allergic to salmon. ✅ Contrast dye reactions and shellfish allergies are not related. That's an old myth from the 80s. No need to fear your imaging tests if you have a shellfish allergy. ✅ Seafood allergies can sometimes be airborne. The smell itself rarely causes severe reactions, but it can trigger mild symptoms. ❗Unfortunately, we don't have desensitization treatments yet for fish or shellfish like we do for other foods. But bodies can change! Some people develop, and others outgrow these allergies. If you have fish 🐟 or shellfish 🦐 allergies and need testing or real answers, let us know — we’re here to help! 🙌🏽 📞: (678) 325-3788 💻: Schedule an appointment 📍12 Locations: Alpharetta, Atlanta, Buford, Canton, Cumming, Druid Hills, Duluth, Johns Creek, Lawrenceville, Midtown Atlanta, Marietta, Woodstock #FishAllergy #ShellfishAllergy #ChackoAllergy #AtlantaAllergist #FoodAllergies #MythBusting #ChocoHero

Trader Joe’s Allergen Alert. 🚨 this is a reminder that you always have to check and double check and sometimes you won’t even catch it on the second look. It is easy to get fatigued when searching for ingredients and just rely on top allergen list. However, this shows that we must always be vigilant.. This particular pasta did not have shellfish identified in the bold top allergen area. It was within lots of different ingredients, and pretty discrete. I am glad that both my and my mother’s eyes were on it, otherwise it could have been disastrous. Clams are shellfish, unfortunately fda standards does not require it to be identified on allergen list. Labeling laws have a long way to go. But Most importantly we should voice our concerns to @traderjoes that ALL shellfish should be identified! #zacky #foodallergies #foodallergy #shellfishallergy #mislabeling #traderjoes #garlickypasta #mistake #top9

The way your food behaves can be a safety indicator. Unopened shellfish during cooking may signal they were unsafe. Play it safe and discard them. When reheating food or drinks, certain plastics can be hazardous. Choose glass or ceramic containers instead. Depth is key when cooling leftovers. Avoid large containers that trap heat and opt for shallow ones to prevent bacterial growth. Canned foods deserve care after opening. Shift leftovers to a clean, food-safe container to preserve quality and safety.Weaving these practices into your daily routine can have a profound impact on food safety and overall well-being.

A realistic look of traveling with a shellfish allergy. Although I am a seasoned traveler ( I travel all over the world for work) this is sometimes how it looks especially when traveling to Asia ! A few years ago I was here and found a few great spots but tonight ended up being much harder than I remembered. I love it here and love Asian food but I just realized I needed a bit more planning to find the right places to go. I’m sharing this just to show a bit more of the behind the scenes of my life and of course if anyone has good recommendations! Ok that’s it wish me luck bye! #shellfishallergy #tokyo #japanvlog #foodallergy #travel

Shellfish allergy is the most common adult food allergy, but had seemed left behind in the race to new food allergy therapies. OIT has been difficult: it’s not easy to carry a dose of cooked, chilled shrimp. 🍤 But finally, there’s momentum for both shellfish and fish allergy therapies. Our article covers: – New approaches to OIT with a shellfish and cod solution. – A sizable trial with shrimp powder. – Excitement over Xolair for seafood allergies. – At a minimum: introducing some avoided food into the diet. Will the tide turn for seafood allergy therapies? Go to the link in our bio or search ‘seafood’ at AllergicLiving.com. It’s important for individuals with shellfish allergies to avoid all types of shellfish and to be aware of potential cross-reactivity. Additionally, they should carefully read food labels, ask about ingredients in restaurants, and carry epinephrine (such as an EpiPen) in case of accidental exposure and a severe allergic reaction. If you suspect you have a shellfish allergy, it’s essential to consult an allergist for proper diagnosis and management. Dr. Jones and Dr. Khan are both board certified allergists/immunologists and we put up weekly posts about general education related to allergies. Shellfish reactions aren’t always allergies—it’s often missing enzymes. 🦐 Breaking out in hives or feeling nauseous after eating shrimp, thinking you’re allergic to all shellfish forever? Your body might not be having an immune reaction to the shellfish itself—it could be lacking the specific enzymes needed to break down chitin and other proteins, causing digestive distress that mimics an allergic response. When you support your digestive enzyme production and understand the difference between true allergies and enzyme deficiencies, you might discover you can actually enjoy shellfish again with the right digestive support.
