Ring making with silver clay: Accounting for shrinkage. I’ve had a lot of questions about ring making and indeed shrinkage must be accounted for. Here is a silver clay rings 101 to help in the process. Thank you to Amy for this commission from abroad and best of luck to you ✨ A little more info: 1. Use sterling silver for a strong band. Sterling contains a small amount of copper. This alloy is stronger than fine silver (which is pure silver) 2. Sterling clay requires a kiln to fire 3. Different sterling clays shrink at different rates so the “make two sizes bigger and use a pellet” method is a catchall. Alternately, you can experiment to figure shrinkage for what you’re using, and build a band exactly big enough to shrink to the size you need. 4. For this particular band I used EZ960 sterling, which I like for this purpose because it dries a little soft and so I could easily fill in and re-stamp the couple of letters that stamped wonky the first time. 5. The truth…👇 This is a wildly oversimplified way of explaining how fine silver clay works 😅 . When I started using this material I truly thought it was going to be just as easy as I made it look in this reel. . The more I used it I realized very quickly that metal clay is very temperamental and particular. There’s a loooot of little things that aren’t shown in this video that go into working with silver clay to get a real, solid, long lasting, smooth piece of fine silver jewelry. . Now that being said, I do love working with silver clay! It’s very fun and definitely opens up a lot of possibilities for me in jewelry making! .
