My husband grew up in third-world poverty and has been a minimalist his entire life. I’m a second generation hoarder-turned-minimalist. Here are a 7 normal things we DON’T buy as a #minimalstfamily 👉 Gifts. My husband and I haven’t given each other gifts in over 8 years, including birthday gifts, anniversary presents, and holidays like Mother’s/Father’s Day. We do give our kids gifts for birthdays and Christmases, but we go for quality over quantity. 👉 Tons of toys. We used to have an entire house full of toys that no one ever played with. We got rid of 95% of toys, and now they all fit in a single toy box - and my kids haven’t missed them at all! 👉 Physical books. I used to consider myself a “book person,” never mind that after having kids, most of my books sat collecting dust on the shelf for YEARS without being read. I got rid of most of them and swapped to audiobooks instead, and I’m “reading” more than ever! 👉 Nail polish or manicures. Pretty nails were a fantasy self item for me; real me much prefers short-clipped nails that are au natural. Bye-bye, unused nail polish! 👉 The latest upgrades. My current phone is over 5 years old, and my husband drove the same Honda Accord for 13 years. We strive to buy less, choose well, and make things last. 👉 Credit card debt. Our philosophy is that if we can’t afford to buy it in cash, we can’t afford to own it. 👉 Last, we don’t buy into the idea that “stuff” is what makes us happy!!! Three years ago, I did something that felt a little crazy. I got rid of most of what our family owned. Because I was tired. Tired of the constant mess. Tired of cleaning all day and still feeling behind. Tired of managing stuff we didn’t even use. I thought letting go would feel scary. But you know what surprised me? It felt like I could finally breathe again. Less stuff = less stress. The fewer items we owned, the calmer our home became. Cleaning stopped taking all day. Messes disappeared faster. And the biggest surprise? Our kids thrived. Fewer toys meant more creativity. Less overwhelm. More outside time. More imagination. I don’t remember 90% of what I donated. But I will never forget the peace that followed. I got my time back. My energy back. Our home back.
