It’s citrus season again! 🍋4 tips for making your mini lemon tree into a bonsai…or just successfully growing citrus in a pot👇 🏖️Sandy soil: citrus likes drainage more than anything! Use a cactus mix and ammend with 30-40% horticultural sand. 💦Water: now your tree has excellent drainage you can water more often, and very deeply. The roots will take up the water they need and the rest will drain away quickly which will promote healthy flowers, foliage & fruit. 🪴Bonsai style: to achieve that rugged tree aesthetic, gradually brush away soil from the top revealing the roots. They will harden when exposed to air and you will begin seeing that gnarled root look. 🍋Be patient! This pink lemon tree has been in training for 4 years already. The trunk has been growing thick (but not tall due to being constrained to the pot) and a curve has been gently molded into the trunk using wire. When people ask, “What kind of pot should I use for my lemon tree?” I always give the same answer: one with lots of holes and very good drainage! 🪴 A well-draining pot and well-draining potting soil mix are crucial in the success and well-being of your citrus tree, no matter the variety. A pot with poor drainage can cause root rot, yellow or dropped leaves, and poor or even no fruit production. That’s a lot of issues that can be avoided if you choose the right pot for your citrus tree! Our lemon (and citrus) trees are working hard this time of year, pulling a huge amount of nutrients from the soil to grow the lemons/limes/ oranges/ mandarins -that we’ll enjoy all winter. 🍋 So it’s the perfect time to give them a little extra love. I like to feed mine with comfrey leaves and a sprinkle of Epsom salt to top up the minerals. If you don’t have comfrey growing, a good seaweed fertiliser (or seaweed) works beautifully too.
