We had the best time in Show Low! If you live in the Phoenix area and want to catch some snow before the end of winter, or escape the fast approaching heat of summer, I highly recommend the three hour drive! The constant change in scenery, beautiful canyons, and plethora of places to stop make it an easy drive for littles. Beware though, if you or your kiddos are prone to motion sickness, take precautions. Those switch backs and sharp turns are brutal. Here’s a quick recap of our trip! We rented a cabin in the Torreon community. The neighborhood is gorgeous and the homes have lots of privacy. There is a park and golf course if you are visiting during warmer weather! You can find amazing Mexican food and gigantic margaritas at Los Corrales. We drove to Greer twice, it’s about an hour away. Once for an awesome dinner at the iconic Molly Butler Lodge and another time for sledding! The awesome sledding spot is off the 260, just passed the turn off to Sunrise! There’s a tower you’ll see from a distance, turn at the small parking lot with a bathroom on the south side of the road. We did lots of exploring off Mogollon Rim Rd. We saw so many deer and horses when we went at dusk! You’ll cross it just as you leave the Fort Apache Reservation and enter into Show Low. It runs East and West off the 60 and was maintained well enough for us to drive on. Use your own judgement based on weather conditions and specific vehicle though. It was a great place for a nature scavenger hunt on foot and had plenty of trails for ATV and UTVs! The food and atmosphere at The House came highly recommended. We had burgers while the kids danced and ran around. We ordered breakfast and coffee from Persnikkitys twice. Once to-go and again, in-person, before we headed home! On this day in history, it snowed in Arizona ❄️ ☃️The snow capped Catalina Mountains on March 2, 2023 felt unreal. The White Mountains of Arizona currently have 🚩EXTREME Drought conditions 🚩 warranting concerns about increased wildfire risk. One spark could quickly spread to a devastating disaster. Everyone in the White Mountains of Arizona should practice extreme care when enjoying the forests. When I hiked Springs Trail and Ice Cave Trail today, 🗓️ June 22, 2025, I was shocked to see both Thompson and Porter Creek were dried up. I’ve never seen it this dry in the 13 years I’ve lived here. This was a stark reminder of just how dangerous the current drought conditions are for this place we call home. At the trail head of Springs Trail, I saw several cigarette butts laying in the pine needles.
