In 1905, a year now called Einstein’s Annus Mirabilis (miracle year), Albert Einstein published his Special Theory of Relativity. The key paper, titled “On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies,” was submitted on June 30, 1905 and published later that year. In this work, Einstein demonstrated that time is not universal or absolute. Instead, the passage of time depends on the relative motion of the observer. Two observers moving at different speeds will measure different time intervals for the same event — a phenomenon now known as time dilation. This wasn’t philosophy or speculation. It followed directly from two experimentally supported principles: The laws of physics are the same for all inertial observers. The speed of light in a vacuum is constant for everyone, regardless of motion.
