Real life as a special needs mom & full-time caregiver ⚡️✨ From lifting my disabled teen to practicing her AAC device and encouraging communication through play with her brother.. I also had been working on phasing this activity chair out.. but on days when she’s already spunky like this, the chair becomes the safest option for both of us. Talking about money around disability can feel a little uncomfortable, but I want to be honest about it. Minnesota does a really good job of setting families up for success and helping make it possible to keep kids with disabilities at home with their families. We are incredibly lucky to have access to supports like this. When we first started the paid parent program, I felt weird about it. Honestly, I wouldn’t even talk about it. But the truth is, when you are both a mom and a full-time caregiver, it is a job. It goes far beyond typical parenting. These programs exist for families like ours. They’re designed so kids can stay home, be cared for by the people who love them most, and still get the support they need. So if you qualify for benefits like this, use them. We found a school that understands her!! As a medical parent navigating early childhood education for a child with special needs, the thought of leaving her was terrifying!
