Raising a teen with a disability requires each and everyone of us to make tradeoffs in this life.. including my teen 🥹 Today my girl spent some time with friends at daycare (our respite) so mom and dad could take the babies bowling… and have us be parents.. not parents & caregivers. She’s in one room playing with her siblings - laughing, loud, carefree. I’m in the other room carrying the weight of it all. And I Will continue to as long as she’ll let me. Yes, we teach her. Through conversations, through modeling, through gentle practice. And when she’s at school, away from us, we are constantly amazed by her strength and ability to take on so much of her own care. But when she’s home? We choose to let her just be a kid. She has her entire lite to manage this disease. Burnout is real. Childhood is so short. So for now, while she’s little, we carry it for her. Listening for alarms. Late night site changes (her choice - because she sleeps right through them). Watching numbers. Counting carbs. The exhausting mental load and decision fatigue - doses, ratios, adjustments. One day, she’ll carry more of this herself. But today, she gets to play. One moment we were in a museum, surrounded by butterflies, laughing and soaking it all in. The next, a fracture sent my body spiraling back eleven years—fight-or-flight took over. My heart raced, my stomach turned, I couldn’t breathe… eating felt mechanical, exhaustion washed over me, and my nervous system was screaming. I had gone to New Orleans hoping to reignite my son’s brain plasticity, to help him do all the things he dreams of. Instead, we were suddenly navigating fear, pain, and overwhelm. This is pride. You can’t see his face clearly. Or see what inspired it. But you can see the pride. You can’t see that this baby boy just pulled his left knee and then right knee into his chest on his own for the first time ever in crawl position. You can’t see the two @napacenter therapists who cheered loudly as I was still figuring out if it really happened. And you can’t see the look on Waylon’s face as he looked up at his therapist Tiffany, with the sweetest-in-shock face and eyes wide-with-wonder as if to say, “Did I really just do that?” Because we were all there in the moment and didn’t get it on film. But you can see the seconds right after. You can see my brave boy smiling and laughing - LAUGHING - at how accomplished he felt. Feeling my son feeling proud of himself is - I’m convinced - the greatest feeling on this entire planet. I didn’t know if it would ever even be possible. But I’m starting to remember that absolutely anything is possible. We could use more of those moments. More of these hard-won wins.
