Each leggy little is growing fast and exploring every inch of the space as they test out their climbing skills. She’s better at using a camera than me📸🐒 In my lifetime I’ve worked with hundreds of species of animals but my favorite of all time might have to be Spider monkeys. Watching the way they interact with each other, it resembles human love. They celebrate the birth of a child just like us, they hug each other and protect the mother at all costs. One of the biggest struggles these animals face is the illegal wildlife trade. This troop of monkeys in this video are all animals that were once victims of the pet trade. But through years of re-wildling they get to live the way monkeys were intended to, in the wild. Who agrees with Ebony?! #JustHereForTheSnacks #AndRihanna Ebony, the spider monkey, is one of our geriatric residents here at Utah’s Hogle Zoo. People often ask what ”geriatric” means in the context of animals. It means they are living well beyond what their life expectancy would be in their natural habitat. This is because, under human care, they don’t have predators, they don’t have to search for food, and they have access to excellent animal care like a nutritious diet, mental and physical exercise, and veterinary support. Ebony is in her late 40s and receives extra care for some of her natural signs of aging. For example, her biscuits are soaked and veggies are boiled, so they are softer and easier to chew and digest. But don’t let her age fool you! She still loves greeting people she knows and has not lost her spunk. 🍩🍩🍩 Time to make the Ice Donuts to keep our animals cool during the Summer Heat! Our Zoo Commissary Lead Food Technician Nick Rios, a former chef, shares his recipe for Ice Donuts. They look like the real thing! 👀 Ingredients: Sugar Free Jam, Chopped Vegetables and Fruits to resemble sprinkles, Water, Donut Ice Mold 👀 Steps: 1️⃣ Microwave Jam long enough so that it has a tad liquid consistency. 2️⃣ Sprinkle chopped fruits/vegetables on bottom of mold. 3️⃣ Pour warm jam on top of fruits/vegetables to cover about ¼ of bottom mold. 4️⃣ Refrigerate for ½ hour so jam regains its room-temperature consistency. 5️⃣ Carefully add enough water on top of refrigerated jam to fill below the rim of each donut mold 6️⃣Freeze overnight This treat was specifically made for our Spider Monkeys. Our adult Spider Monkeys, especially, Hugo, cornered the market for the donuts. Hopefully, next time, the Baby Spider Monkeys will be able to taste all the ingredients and not just the ice that Hugo left of one ice donut after eating all the Jam! I was told that Hugo is used to jam because that is what they use for him to take his medication!
