Molting is one of the most strenuous processes caterpillars among other immature insects go through. For what can be days, they sit motionless allowing their body to prepare and develop into the next stage of development, instar as we call it. Watch this Giant sphinx larva undergo this whole process from start to finish. To walk you through no pun intended, the caterpillar begins by inching its segments closer together, pulling the tracheal tubes out of its spiracles which is that white line you see. Shortly after, it pops its old head capsule off and the newly freed front half of the caterpillar starts to use its front legs to pull the rest of its body out of the old cuticular layer which was once its previous instar. After having completely crawled out of the molt, the caterpillar lies motionless allowing its body to harden, and then eats the shed skin to regain nutrients, think of it as an energy gel packet after a long run. After rearing Cocytius antaeus multiple times this year, I noticed how unbelievably different the horn gets from 4th to 5th instar, and I just knew I had to get a timelapse of this dramatic transition. The purple-pink granulated horn contrasts tremendously against the neon green body segments making the Giant Sphinx arguably one of the nicest sphingid caterpillars we have here in South Florida. There was no fancy equipment involved with the production of this footage. This alien-looking grub is a rhinoceros stag beetle larva. It lives underground for up to 3 years, eating rotting wood and gaining 1,500 times its birth weight. The larva actually weighs more than the adult beetle it will become. Most of that mass fuels the transformation. After all that waiting, the adult beetle lives just 2-4 months. Video author unknown. Сколопендра (Centipede) и Кивсяк (Millipede) - наглядно! 😄 Обожаю обе эти группы многоножек, но к сколопендрам всё же отношусь с уважительной осторожностью. Это хищные, подвижные и ядовитые создания, вооружённые парой модифицированных конечностей - форципул, с помощью которых они впрыскивают яд в добычу. Их укусы могут быть весьма болезненными, особенно у крупных тропических видов. А вот кивсяки - это настоящие миролюбивые травоядные “трамвайчики”. Они медлительны, питаются в основном разлагающимися растениями, мхами, лишайниками и грибами, играя важную роль в экосистеме как санитары почвы. При угрозе выделяют защитную жидкость - у некоторых видов она содержит бензохиноны, но для человека это безвредно (если только не попадёт в глаза). Небольшой спойлер: за время моего отсутствия у меня появилось несколько новых видов кивсяков! А это значит - десятки миниатюрных многоножек, которые в будущем, надеюсь, порадуют потомством. И, конечно, я расскажу о каждом виде подробнее - с фото, фактами и, возможно, наблюдениями за поведением.

Ribbon worms possess a muscular proboscis that looks like it comes from another planet. They’re a diverse phylum consisting of around 1300 species.
