Late in the third quarter in Dallas, Tim Duncan was already on the bench with one technical. A few minutes later, Joey Crawford — one of the league’s most hot-tempered refs — whistled him for a second T and ejected him. The offense? Laughing. Duncan was sitting on the sideline, pulled a towel over his head and chuckled at a call, and Crawford ran over and threw him out. Duncan was stunned: “In shock for a very long time, that went to very, very mad… I know there were a couple choice words flung at his direction at the exit”. He’d just been bounced for smiling. Duncan later told ESPN that Crawford even asked, “Do you want to fight?” as he was leaving the floor. Gregg Popovich lost it on the sideline, and the whole thing felt personal. Duncan accused Crawford of coming into the game with “a personal vendetta” against him. The fallout was massive. David Stern suspended Crawford for the rest of the 2006-07 season and the entire playoffs — he thought his career was over.
