Do you struggle to stand on one foot? Balance is a skill, and like any other part of fitness, it needs to be trained. Not just for workouts, but for walking, hiking, stairs, and preventing falls as you get older. Start with your foundation. Your feet and ankles. Calf raises done a few times a week strengthen the ankle and improve stiffness in the Achilles, which helps with balance and force transfer. Progress to releve calf raises and walking on your tiptoes to challenge ankle stability and foot control. Next, build knee strength and endurance. Hold a yoga lunge for up to 30 seconds. Isometric holds improve joint tolerance and muscular endurance around the knee without excessive joint stress. Now train your hips. The single leg hip hinge strengthens your hamstrings and glute medius, which play a major role in knee alignment and single leg stability. Then work on proprioception. Stand on one foot and close your eyes. This challenges your nervous system and improves your body’s ability to sense position and movement. Research shows balance training like this improves joint awareness and reduces injury risk. Finish by exploring positions. Hold a hinge. Reach one leg out to the side. Reach it forward. These variations teach your body to stay stable in different real life scenarios. Balance is not just standing still. It is strength, coordination, and awareness working together. Train it consistently, and it will carry over to everything you do.

How's your balance? Can you stand on one leg for more than 10 seconds? Poor balance is associated with a higher risk of falls and adverse health outcomes, including all-cause mortality according to a study with 1702 individuals aged 51-75 years. Practicing your balance is easy, just incorporate it to your daily routine, stand on one leg while waiting for the kettle to boil, brushing teeth or watching telly. Start by just lifting the other foot of the ground, then progresses to lifting it higher and moving it to different directions. Always repeat for the other side. You'll notice that one side is usually your better side, so practice more on the weaker side if needed. Or join a yoga class, regular yoga practice is great for improving balance through various asanas that challenge your balance and strengthen the various muscles. Study reference: PMID: 35728834

As we get older, our ability to balance declines. Did you know that a critical predictor for longevity is the length of time someone can stand on 1 leg? Here are 4 simple exercises you can do anywhere to improve your balance: 1) Single Leg Stand: Stand for as long as you can on each leg. You can be discreet about it too… try it while standing in line at the grocery store 😉 2) Heel Toe Walk: Walk forward in a straight line, placing the front foot directly in front of the back foot, making sure to touch your front heel to the back toe. For an extra challenge, try it walking backwards! 3) Leg Swings: While standing on 1 leg, swing your other leg front and back, then across left to right while maintaining your balance. Make sure to stand near something to hold on to for extra support. 4) Foot Taps: Start by standing on 1 leg. Bring your other foot in front of you, touch it with your hand, then bring it behind you to touch again. Perform each exercise on both legs!
