😱 Did you know that the painter of the Capitol rotunda almost plummeted to his death while painting its murals? 🦅 On this Monday after the Super Bowl I'm featuring another American classic, the United States Capitol. 🛠️ Construction on the Capitol began in 1793 to the designs of William Thornton, an amateur architect who had won the design competition for the new Capitol. Thornton would go on to become the first Architect of the Capitol. 🏛️ The Capitol continued to be constructed, remodeled, and expanded over the centuries (including after being burned down by the British during the War of 1812) with other famous architects, such as James Hoban, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, Charles Bullfinch, and Carrère & Hastings all contributing to the structure. 🌐 The iconic cast iron dome, which replaced an earlier dome that was deemed too small after an 1850s expansion of the Capitol adding the current House and Senate chambers more than doubled the length of the Capitol, was designed by Philadelphia architect Thomas Ustick Walter and constructed through the American Civil War between 1855-1866. 👀 The mural above the rotunda on the interior of the dome, The Apotheosis of Washington, was painted by Greek-Italian painter Constatino Brumidi in 1865 and depicts the deification of George Washington, which is ironic since this is exactly the type of thing that the actual George Washington probably would have hated, given his famous aversion to self-aggrandizement. 😱 Later in 1879, while painting the freize in the rotunda, the 74 year old Brumidi fell from the scaffolding and narrowly escaped plummeting 58 feet to his death by grabbing onto the scaffolding, hanging on for 15 minutes before being rescued by a member of the Capitol Police. The experience shook him so much that afterwards he refused to return to the scaffolding and continued to direct the completion of the frieze from his studio. Would you return to work after an experience like that? #uscapitol #capitol #washingtondc #dome #congress #brumidi

It was my great honor to welcome the freshman class of the 119th Congress to the Capitol. They are fired up to get to work for the American people! 🇺🇸

One of the coolest experiences of my life. 🇺🇸 While my husband was in DC for NADA dealer school, I got to tag along for a private tour of the United States Capitol and let me tell you… the videos don’t even come close to doing it justice! Standing in the same rooms where laws were debated, people were attacked and shot at for making laws(wild stories), and history literally shifted gave me chills. The architecture alone is insane, but the stories behind it? Even better. Fun fact: you cannot just walk into the Capitol. Not even the President can stroll in unannounced. Members must be in session or you have to be invited. Access is everything in that building. The tunnels we were able to walk that channel all through underground DC was WILD. The conspiracy theorist in me was losing it lol And here’s my favorite story… John Quincy Adams, who later became President but served in Congress for years after, used to sit at his desk appearing to nap during Democratic caucus meetings. People thought he was asleep. He wasn’t. The acoustics in the chamber were so precise that he could hear whispers from across the room. He would quietly gather information while everyone underestimated him. Moral of the story? Never assume someone isn’t paying attention. 👏🏽 History in that building is not just in the statues and paintings. It’s in the strategy. Mostly playing chess not checkers. If you love politics, architecture, power plays, or just standing where giants once stood… you have to find a way to experience this. #dc #dctour #capitolhilldc

Session Day chaos!! One of the best parts of being in session is seeing so many people come to the Capitol to advocate for what they believe in - but it can get a bit hectic with all the extra bodies. Luckily, I'll take you along through the back rooms & we can catch some things you won't see on a public tour 😉

As I watch in the early hours, Architect of the Capitol workers wash the Capitol steps if only it were that easy to wash away the shame and corruption within. Congress doesn’t have an awareness problem it has a credibility problem. When allegations surface, both parties too often choose silence over accountability. Power over principle. This is how trust erodes not in one scandal, but in a pattern. Moral clarity requires consistency. Without it, Congress risks losing the people it serves. AW
