Oarfish are large, elongated marine fish known for their ribbon-like bodies and remarkable lengths, sometimes reaching up to 36 feet, making them the longest bony fish in the world. They inhabit deep ocean waters, typically at depths of 200 to 1,000 meters, which makes sightings rare and often linked to strandings or storms that bring them closer to shore. Distinguished by their shiny, silver bodies and bright red or orange dorsal fins, oarfish have an undulating swimming motion, resembling a serpent, leading to speculation that they might be the origin of sea serpent myths. Shark spotted at Galle Face on the morning of the 6th of March 2025!! (Look carefully!) What a cool sight to see and not the first for our eagle eyed spotter Kanchana de Zoysa who reported shark sightings to us in the same place previously. Galle Face is used by many as a place to watch sunsets, frolic, fly kites, and eat snacks. Little do they realise that there is life of all kinds out on the reefs. While we cannot identify what kind of shark this is, its swimming form is a dead giveaway - it can only be a 🦈 We are lucky that many people report sightings and strandings of various marine species to us at @oceanswellorg highlighting the power of citizen science for enhancing our knowledge of our marine spaces. A humpback whale briefly scooped a kayaker into its mouth off the Chilean Patagonia before quickly releasing him unharmed in an incident caught on camera. Last Saturday, Adrián Simancas was kayaking with his father, Dell, in Bahía El Águila near the San Isidro lighthouse in the Strait of Magellan when a humpback whale surfaced, engulfing Adrián and his yellow kayak for a few seconds before letting him go. While whale attacks on humans are extremely rare in Chilean waters, whale deaths from collisions with cargo ships have increased in recent years, and strandings have become a recurring issue in the last decade. Fish rescues are one of the many duties performed by CDFW fisheries and regional staff. During wet years, sturgeon swimming upstream to spawn in the Sacramento River will use flood plains as a shortcut; however, they can get stuck in human-created structures when the water recedes. The large size of these prehistoric fish can make it difficult for them to get past these artificial barriers and reach the river on their own. Recent alterations to these structures, such as the Fremont Weir Adult Fish Passage Modification Project, have made strandings less frequent and more manageable but it occasionally still occurs. This past winter, CDFW staff made several sturgeon rescues adjacent to the Sacramento River. It is critical that these fish are promptly returned to the river to avoid mortality which can occur quickly when they get stranded. These rescue efforts are critical to overall conservation of this majestic creature and support of the overall population.
