Let’s clear up a common nail myth 👀—because if you’ve ever wondered what sets a structured gel manicure apart from a gel overlay, you’re not the only one. While these two services may look similar on the surface, they serve different purposes—and knowing the difference can totally change how your manicure wears and how long it lasts 🙌 💪 Structured Gel Manicure = Strength + Support This is the power suit of natural nail services. It uses a builder gel (like Kokoist Platinum Filler Base, Luxio Builder, or Akzentz Trinity) to create a structured apex, reinforcing the nail and helping it grow without breaking—especially great for weak or flat nails. ✅ Builds shape and durability ✅ Uses a builder gel (jar or bottle) ✅ Ideal for short to medium natural nails ✅ Optional color + top coat ✨ Gel Overlay = Lightweight + Quick An overlay is any gel applied over the natural nail without adding length. It adds strength, but doesn’t usually include that apex build. Think: more natural feel, quicker application, less shaping. Products like Luxio Base or Kokoist Mega Stick Base are perfect here. ✅ Strengthens natural nail ✅ Less focus on shaping ✅ Lightweight + time-saving TLDR: All structured manicures are overlays—but not all overlays are structured. If your goal is long-lasting wear with shaping: go structured. If you want something quick and flexible: go overlay. Now you know! Both structured gel manicures and no-chip (aka regular gel) manicures use gel, however they have some big differences! Structured gel manicures use a more durable gel, usually a semi-hard or hard gel, which is used to build an ideal structure on the nail to offer more protection. Nails have a stress point (where they o bend when pressure is applied to the free edge) and so the gel is applied higher on that point, creating an apex to protect it. This is a great option for those who have weak/thin nails and those who want to grow out/maintain longer nails. These manicures can last 3-4+ weeks! No-chip manicures use a very soft base gel which is applied in a thin layer onto the nail. The structure of the natural nail is not adjusted and since it is a softer gel, it does not offer much additional protection to the nail. Because of this, it is not an ideal option for those who have or want length on their nails. No-chip manicures can last up to 2-3 weeks. Many nail techs offer both options! I personally only offer structured gel manicure services for a few reasons. Most clients need or want protection and/or length on their nails so a structured gel manicure is the best option. Structured gel is applied in a special technique which requires additional training so the demand for it is higher. I also have a heavy focus on nail art so a longer lasting manicure helps clients enjoy the art longer. I hope this is helpful and answers this common question I get!
