Where does the Sun rise? Some of the most common comments on our videos are in regard to how things change in the night sky. So, we’ve decided to start a series that shows some of the various motions that civilizations have observed over the millennia. Episode 1: Where does the sun rise? This is one of the most fundamental observations people have made throughout history. (Perhaps equally as important as where the sun sets, but that just depends on your lifestyle) If you make a note of where (against the background of mountains, or in this case, buildings) the sun rises every morning, you will see that that position changes throughout the year. Exactly how much depends on your latitude. We’ve set up our virtual camera overlooking Manhattan, and show the exact position of the sun, 10 minutes after it rises above the horizon every day for a year. One the special days, like the equinoxes, you can see it rises directly in the East. On the solstices, it’s at the far extremes of the annual travel. The explanation for why this happens comes from the tilt of the Earth compared to the plane of its orbit. This is shown in the upper panel.
