We’ll explore how to optimize your board’s position for efficiency and how to adjust your approach based on wave characteristics. Early Identification of a Wave Begin by learning to identify potential waves early. Look for key markers and callouts, such as the wave’s size, the deepening color of the water, its shape, and the direction in which it’s breaking. This early identification allows you to prepare and position yourself effectively. Early Hunting and Positioning Positioning is crucial in surfing. Start with early hunting; this means observing the waves and finding “Spot X,” the optimum position at the wave’s stage of progression. Perfect Position on Board Your chest should be centered, with feet together and head up, allowing for strong paddle strokes while keeping the board’s nose slightly above the water. This efficiency in paddling will help you catch the wave with less effort. Early Runway Paddle Start paddling early as the wave approaches to match its speed. This “runway paddle” technique ensures that by the time the wave reaches you, your board is already moving at an optimum speed, making it easier to catch the wave. Keep checking back to see how the wave is building and make adjustments as needed. Angling the Board Depending on the wave’s steepness, we may need to angle the take-off. This angling technique maximizes rail engagement with the wave’s energy and gets the surfer moving down the line, allowing us more time to pop up. If the wave is peeling fast, we need to adjust to a more aggressive angle. If the wave is mellow, the angle can be more subtle.
