This is where powdered ingredients are dropped through a very hot flame. These ingredients are melted by the flame and drip on a rotating starter crystal. Day 44/75 becoming an Accredited Gemologist ~ Synthetic & Treated Gem Identification (module 2 of my course). Asterism is a phenomenon displayed in certain gemstones, most commonly Corundum, when cut in cabochon. I was inspired to make this video based on a DM I got asking whether it was possible to make synthetic start sapphires… and here is confirmation that it is! Synthetic Star Corundum is grown through the Verneuil process (aka flame fusion) and interestingly the original boule will not display any phenomenon but needs to go through treatment to produce it. Because it can be manufactured in practically unlimited quantities, I consider this to be a “fake” gemstone, though gemologists typically don’t use the term “fake” as it’s not specific enough to identify it. For reference, this synthetic flux grown ruby is 10.02 cts. and was acquired for $4.02 on the streets of Bangkok. If this were a natural, unheated Burmese ruby, the price would be in the millions. . . . . 👉So, did you get it right? Let me know in the comments!👇 . . . 💎Flux Growth Process💎 A mixture of aluminum oxide (AL2O3) is combined with a small amount of chromium and is placed in a crucible (a container typically made out of platinum & iridium). 🧪 A flux (lead oxide or another chemical) is also added to the crucible, which acts like a solvent. 🔥 The crucible is heated to high temperatures (usually above 2000°F) in a furnace. Allowing the aluminum oxide and chromium to dissolve into the flux. ⏳ This solution is then cooled very slowly (often over weeks or months). As it is cooling, ruby crystals begin to form and grow. 🔨 After the crucible is allowed to fully cool, the crucible is broken open and the ruby crystals are carefully removed from the hardened flux. 💍 Lastly, they are cleaned, cut into gemstones and used in jewelry! . . . . . . ‼️DO IT YOURSELF: LEARN TO SPOT FAKE GEMS‼️
