Fading the lure. A step some people seem to have a lot of struggle with. I see many handlers luring for months and years, making their dog very dependent on direct reward. I personally like to change to indirect rewarding as soon as possible. This way you can assess very early if your dog really understands the position and exercise or is not just following the lure without thinking. You can see mistakes being made building the exercise earlier and sort them out straight away. Jump into a focus-heel! More rear-end awareness practice should be done before attempting all of these steps-for more dogs of course! 1) Teach front paw touch on a raised platform (you can use a box, anything flat and slightly elevated to provide tactile information) *this is a rubber feeding pan from Tractor Supply-along with a metal dog bowl 2) Lure them so they can rotate their back end around the touch pad easily while maintaining front-paws on the surface (I suggest practicing this at your side-take a small step, lure them around to make contact with your leg-reward and repeat) 3) Practice the same thing, but from sitting in front of you (front feet on touch pad), lure all the way around and back to your side 4) Repeat the same process, but without a touch pad *I tend to add in a command once this starts becoming pretty smooth-WHILE dog is moving into position (capturing) 5) Then say the command a split second before the movement.
