1. They apologize for existing more than for mistakes. You hear “sorry to ask,” “sorry to bother you,” or “sorry if this is silly,” even when nothing is wrong. Psychologically, this comes from learning early that taking space creates tension. The nervous system tries to soften itself before anyone else can reject it. It’s not politeness. It’s self-protection. 2. They struggle to receive praise without shrinking it. When someone says “you did great,” the answer is “it was nothing” or “anyone could do it.” Low self-esteem has trouble holding positive feedback because praise raises expectations. The brain pushes it away to avoid pressure or future failure, so compliments feel unsafe instead of supportive. 3. They over-explain simple things. Long messages, extra details, reasons no one asked for. This behavior comes from fear of being judged as wrong. Over-explaining is an unconscious way of asking for permission after the fact. It’s not clarity. It’s anxiety trying to stay ahead of criticism. 4. They correct others whenever they can, even on small details that don’t matter. This often surprises people, but constant correcting is usually not confidence, it’s control. Correcting creates a short feeling of safety and order inside. “If I’m right, I’m okay.” Because the relief is brief, the behavior repeats. 5. They tolerate behavior that quietly hurts them. They stay polite, laugh things off, and say “it’s fine” when it isn’t. People with low self-esteem often confuse endurance with strength. Boundaries feel risky, so familiar discomfort feels safer than possible rejection. Resentment builds quietly while they remain agreeable. Which one felt most familiar to notice today?
