These are some of the books that have helped me improve as a Technical Writer. 📚✨ It’s so interesting to learn what everyone else does outside of our community. What’s your job? 😊

Here’s what you need to know👇🏼 I interned at a top Chicago literary agency for over a year. As a writer, I learned the ins and outs of the publishing world—and what agents are looking for from debut authors! ✍🏼 If you’re ready to traditionally publish your novel, the first step is pitching your manuscript to an agent, usually through email. Want to make a good impression? 🤔 HERE are 3 things I learned:👇🏼 1. For debut authors, word count caps are pretty strict. 📔 Even if every word is great, an agent will likely NOT accept your novel if it’s over 100k (even for genres like fantasy!) ✍🏼 This is because more words cost more money to print, and debut authors don’t have a track record of sales yet. Literary agents want to see if your book sells before letting you have free range with word count. 😅 2. Literary agents get THOUSANDS of queries. Don’t take rejections personally. 📔 As an intern, I sorted THOUSANDS of emails from writers. From these, we requested a few hundred manuscripts. And from those, we signed ONE author in the entirety of my time there. 😬 Rejections don’t always mean the writing was bad. We often rejected manuscripts if the genre didn’t fit with our style, or we already had too much on our plate. So, DON’T take rejection personally (it’s hard, I know).✍🏼 3. Your pitch matters. 📔 Your pitch is the first thing agents see. 👀 Look up a “query letter format.” You’ll quickly see that there’s a “formula” to queries—don’t deviate from this! Your manuscript is where your creativity will shine. Keep your query letter clear, concise, and punchy.👏🏼 And REMEMBER: being published is NOT necessary to be a good writer. ✍🏼 I’m happy to answer questions in the comments about my experience to help you guys out. 🫶🏼 COMMENT: Do you have publishing dreams? 📔 FOLLOW for more writing advice, motivation, and good vibes! 🤍 #literaryagent #literaryagents #amquerying #writergram #writersofinsta #writesofnovember #writingadvice #publishingadvice #newwritersclub #writersofig #writergirl

⚠️ This new tool changes EVERYthing… The number one mistake I see writers make: querying agents before their manuscript is *COMPLETELY* polished (aka, ready to hit bookstore shelves!) But how DOES one polish their own writing, when they’re so close to it? I’m not talking about fixing commas or semicolons — I’m talking about substantial, big picture changes. Up til now, this was very hard (or expensive) for writers to do on their own. So I was *thrilled* when I discovered ProWritingAid’s new Manuscript Analysis feature which provides an instant 10+ page critique on your full manuscript, for under $50 (!!) My mind was BLOWN when I tried it out. It analyzes: 📊Plot structure and pacing 👥Character development and arcs 💥Narrative tension and stakes 🛒Genre-specific expectations and comp suggestions (The report is generated with AI, but AI is not used to alter your writing and your writing is never used to train their model. Your intellectual property stays 100% yours. 🔒) Even better? ProWritingAid offers tons of FREE features to help polish your draft: 📝 Sticky sentences report 🔄 Overused words report 🗣️ Spelling + grammar check ✨Comment GETPWA for my guide to getting the most from this tool (the free version is *amazing*), plus a discount code for the Premium version!

It takes so much brain power to write a synopsis. 🤣 #books #writing #writertok #writerhumor #writingabook

TAP! TIP 1 → DEFINE YOUR PURPOSE Before you put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), take some time to write out your reasoning behind wanting to write a book. What’s driving you? Do you like that reason? This step is crucial, because on the days when writing tests you, you’ll know it’s worth it in the long run. TIP 2 → STUDY Pick one area of ignorance you know you will need to overcome and dive into learning how to improve in it. This can be learning story structure, descriptive writing, developing emotional character arcs, etc. You’ll eventually cover all of them, but for the time being, picking one is the best way to get you moving. TIP 3 → PRACTICE Take the information you’re learning and immediately apply it to small pieces of practice work. (This can be a scene you picture one day being part of a full book, or just whatever you feel like using for practice at the time.) Doing this ensures that you absorb what you’re learning and allows your skills to truly start developing. TIP 4 → SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS As you learn these skills + once you decide it’s time to dive into your first full manuscript, setting specific expectations of how often you will write, how many words you’ll write each session, and when you will have things done by (chapters, drafts, etc) will keep your progress constant and predictable. TIP 5 → JUST START WRITING Commit to putting words on the page, even if they aren’t perfect. Focus on getting your ideas out without giving in to self-criticism. The first draft is meant to be rough (trust me, it won’t disappoint on that front…). Try to embrace the process, leaning into the knowledge that you can refine and improve later. The most important thing is to start and keep going. ✨ Liked these tips and want some help getting started? Tap the link in my bio to download my FREE goal-setting workbook, “Write Beyond Limits!”

Top 4 tools for any beginning writer: • K. M. Weiland’s Outlining Your Novel and Structuring Your Novel workbooks. When I first started to really take writing seriously I used these resources to help me figure out my process for structuring, outlining, and plotting the entirety of a novel. The workbooks provided multiple different approaches for how to do this, and I was able to build my own personal way of outlining once I saw all the ways it could be done! •Dry erase boards. As a beginning writer I found that my thoughts and ideas were all over the place, so I’d brainstorm my ideas and write them all on a dry erase board, erasing them and adjusting as I saw fit. Something about being able to do this by hand – while also being able to easily erase – really helped. •Google Docs. Though I went through various different platforms (Microsoft Word, Pages, and Scrivener, to name a few), Google Docs has always been the most user-friendly for me, and makes formatting easy. Also, being able to create folders within folders within folders in Google Drive has also been deeply helpful. •Storymatic. This was a card game my family got me once I started to show a deep interest in writing again. Even though I no longer use it, the cards are filled with different scenes and character ideas! It’s a perfect place to start when you’re stuck in the middle of a chapter and are running out of motivation.
