If your dough feels slow to rise, this trick helps 👇 I place my dough in the oven with just the light on to gently warm it and kickstart fermentation. But here’s the important part: I only do this for about the first hour after mixing. Leaving dough in a warm oven too long can easily lead to overproofing. After that first boost, I move it back to the counter and let fermentation finish normally. A thermometer. I am not a science-y person, and temping my dough always seemed overkill. But it was helped SO much in knowing how long to expect my dough to take. It’s just one piece in the timing puzzle, but it’s made a big difference! Also helpful for temping when bakes are done in the oven :) 2. A stir stick. They’re cheap and used for everythinggggg. Just buy one. Or three🤪 3. A scale. BUY. THE. SCALE. I have a couple linked at different price points, but truly, I don’t think you can do sourdough well without one. Let’s translate 😂 You’re on days 4-6 and your dough or starter isn’t rising, the problem might not be your process but might be your thermostat 👀 Check the room temp. Sourdough thrives between 75-80 degrees (24-27C). If your kitchen is sitting at 68 or cooler (I’m guilty of this, I love sleeping in the cold) your fermentation will move so slow. I have THREE solutions for you to try: 1️⃣ The oven “proofer” hack - place your starter in the oven (turned OFF) with just the oven light on. Be sure to leave a note so you don’t accidentally preheat it!! 2️⃣ Find the “cozy” corner in your home/kitchen. Look for hidden warm spots: on top of the fridge, near a running dishwasher, kitchen counter with lights, or even inside a microwave. 3️⃣ If you live in the cold and really want a sourdough (I wouldn’t blame you) and option 1 & 2 aren’t working for you, use a heat mat. It’s been a life saver that I never I expected to love this much! And yes it’s from Amazon…and yes, I bought one for every woman in my family for Christmas!😂 I thought my granite would be the perfect surface to shape my sourdough bread, & don’t get me wrong it is great for shaping, BUT….
