What to do with a sloped backyard? ANSWER: Terraccing. This section of my yard was just a sloped unusable space. Managing water passively on a steep slope is super important. Not only can it prevent erosion and downhill water-logging, when managed well, it can transform a dry slope into a hydrated one - perfect for gardening! A major technique we’ve used at our place is terracing. It’s allowed us to create flat sections for food, animals and play and establish plants which would otherwise struggle. Terracing slows and sinks water INTO the soil, instead of it shooting off down the slope. Along with a diverse range of plants (perennial plants are best), water is then stored in the ground, which is actually the best rain tank you could possibly have. Overall, this improves plant health and reduces the need for irrigation over the hot months. *Just a note, when doing earth works on this scale you always have to plan for a safe “overflow” system for any flash flooding or extended rain periods. As we’re in an urban setting, we’ve designed our slope so any surplus water is directed to the storm water drain, instead of our neighbour’s lounge room downhill.
