Here’s how you and your students can create tessellations using a sticky note (or small square piece of paper)! Here is the optimized version of the spiral cube. And… what’s the foldable analogy of a curved spiral? Right, it’s a square twist! In tessellations they behave exactly the same. Yeah, I know, I know that it’s not as exciting as curved fold 😊😜 but if you fold this one and post, I will share with you the spiral CP. If you look closely enough at the living world, the same families of shapes keep appearing… spirals, branching fractals, radial symmetry, tessellations. Not because life is copying a template, but because matter grows under constraints. Space, energy, flow, tension, packing, diffusion, all of these forces quietly “select” certain geometries again and again. A sunflower head, a pinecone, a shell, a hurricane, a galaxy. Different materials, different scales, similar mathematics. Sometimes the spirals follow Fibonacci like counts, because that arrangement distributes new growth efficiently around a center. Sometimes forms approach the golden angle, about 137.5 degrees, because it reduces overlap and gives each new element more access to light and space. Fractals show up whenever growth repeats a rule across scales, like branching in trees, rivers, lungs, coral. Symmetry shows up whenever a system stabilizes around balance, like petals, snowflakes, crystals. The “mandala” comparison lands for a reason. What we call beauty is often what the nervous system recognizes as coherent structure.
