One reason supervisors reject research topics is because the topic is too broad. A topic like: “Impact of social media on students” is not clear enough. What social media? Which students? What impact? Which country or context? What exactly are you measuring? Use this simple method to narrow your topic: 1. Add the population Who are you studying? Example: undergraduate students, MSc students, employees, teachers, customers. 2. Add the context Where is the study happening? Example: Sri Lanka, private universities, banking sector, online learning environment. 3. Add the main variable What exactly are you studying? Example: TikTok usage, AI tool usage, academic stress, job satisfaction, customer trust. 4. Add the outcome What is being affected? Example: academic procrastination, thesis writing confidence, employee performance, customer loyalty. 5. Make it researchable A good topic should show who, where, what, and what relationship you are studying. Simple template: The impact of [independent variable] on [dependent variable] among [population] in [context]. Example: The impact of TikTok usage on academic procrastination among undergraduate students in Sri Lanka. Another example: The effect of AI tool usage on thesis writing confidence among MSc students. A strong topic is not just interesting. It should be specific, measurable, and possible to study. How to ⬇️ But some numbers first: 275 pages (including 118 pages of supplementary materials and references) 3 systematic literature reviews (crazy I know) 4 original research studies 5 already published papers 2 articles that we will try to publish in the future 60.000 words written (just pure text, excluding references!) I am an enthusiast writer so I didn't dread writing my PhD thesis, but there still were some rules I followed that helped my writing: ✍🏼 A good thesis is a written thesis - I deliberately didn't spend any unnecessary time trying to "perfect" what I wrote. I allowed myself to write imperfect drafts because editing an imperfect draft and building a complete initial version is the most important part. ✍🏼 Seeking feedback early and often - I created fake deadlines for my supervisors to get to me that were earlier than my actual deadlines. I sent my thesis out for feedback chapter by chapter so that we could spot if there was any major flow in how I was building my arguments. I didn't get detailed feedback beyond "no major flows so far" on each chapter, only after it was fully ready, but with this approach I allowed myself to make major mistakes and not freak out in case they happen. ✍🏼 I wrote consistently - since each chapter of my thesis is basically a paper, I had some chapter drafts already written. I have worked on them since the beginning of year 2. I scheduled days when I blocked my calendar off completely and focused on drafting. Over time this built a decent database of ideas, paragraphs, even whole sections that I could stitch together and improve. Save this for future writing reference! 💫 And let me know if I should make a more detailed post about the writing plan, outline, and routine. #writing #writingtips #motivation #academicwriting #literaturereview #review #publish #universitytips #phdjourney #phdtips #gradschool #productivity #publishing #studywithme #PhDstudent #phd #university #academia #academic #science #studymotivation #studyhard #universitystudent #gradschoolproblems
