Ten tips that will make playing parallel thirds a breeze: . 1. It’s not and up and down movement, but in and out / forward and backward movement. . 2. Think more of swiping rather than pumping. . 3. One of the note, usually the bottom one but not always, releases earlier. They are not played on equal value. . 4. Keep your outer finger a little bit more inside the keyboard compared to your thumb. . 5. You don’t have to go to the thumb. Remember the thumb has the biggest range of movement and can play on the side. So keep the outer finger as your center. . 6. Keep your elbows close to your body at all times. If you go out, that means you’re out of the keyboard, and you will have to go up and down which is not an efficient way of moving. . 7. Your hand position will change depending on where you are on the keyboard, but the relationship between the pinky and the thumb is NEVER on a straight line. . 8. The bounce comes from the feedback of the key when you finish each flick. It is not something that you arbitrarily make with your arm. The arm follows but the finger’s swiping motion leads. . 9. If you cannot feel the surface of the key, that means you are holding your weight somewhere. And this will cause you to do more when the goal is to learn to do less. Relax, let the feedback of the key help you measure how much and when to move. . 10. Feel the key before playing. If you can’t or aren’t, means you’re playing up and down from the air. .
