Finding the world’s smallest penguin in New Zealand 🐧 If seeing penguins is on your bucket list, you don’t have to go to Antarctica! We visited Timaru on New Zealand’s South Island road trip to see little blue penguins (also called kororā). The world’s smallest penguin species at just 10-12 inches tall. Every night at sunset, they return from the ocean to their nests on shore. We arrived right at sunset and waited what felt like hours in the cold. Eventually, groups of them started swimming ashore and waddling up the beach!😄 Tips if you visit: ⚠️Stay behind the barriers and only view from the designated paths this protects the penguins and keeps them safe 🌅 Arrive at sunset, but be patient! They come ashore on their own schedule 🔇 They’re way louder than you’d expect for something so tiny 👀 Volunteers are there to help any penguins that wander off course, if you see one please inform the volunteers This was a great way to end our New Zealand trip. It’s on your way to Queenstown and only 2 hours from Christchurch Welcome to 📍Timaru. It deserves more than a stopover. We started at sunrise at Jack’s Point Lighthouse. Quiet coastal track, soft light, barely anyone around. One of those slow mornings that sets the tone for the whole trip. Midday reset at Naked Soul Space, sauna, plunge, float. Didn’t expect to feel that relaxed in the middle of a road trip, but here we are. If you have not done floating before, I highly recommend it 😍🧖‍♀️ Checked into Timaru TOP 10, parked up, quick refresh… then walked down to see the Little Blue Penguins come in at dusk. And yes, follow the signage and the volunteers. They’re doing an amazing job protecting them. Also, it is totally free to see them unlike in other cities where you have to pay upto $75 NZD The next day we drove out to Geraldine for an alpaca walk (highly recommend if you want something wholesome and slightly chaotic), stocked up at Barker’s, wandered the town, and then headed to Peel Forest for the Big Tree Walk. Today, on our drive home from Dunedin in New Zealand’s South Island, we stopped in to Timaru to see the canola fields. At the moment, the canola crops are in full flower throughout most of South Canterbury, but the most Instagramable spot is this one. Canola fields right on the beach are pretty rare, so this is a pretty cool spot. It was an unexpected detour but well worth the trip. The added bonus is that this walking track is dog friendly so we took pooch for a walk. The waves were pretty rough but it wasn’t too windy which made for a pretty pleasant walk. For a spot just 5 minutes off the main highway, it was well worth a quick stop.
