I’m still a little surprised that Tortuga Tools chooses to send me tools to test and review. I’m not a huge influencer. I’m not followed by the entire pottery world. I’m just someone who spent 27 years teaching high school ceramics, standing beside wheels, loading kilns, and watching thousands of students learn what clay can do. Over that time, I’ve handled a lot of tools. Some good. Some forgettable. A few that earned a permanent place in the studio. Was so much fun trying out these ultra sharp, ultra pink @tortugatools trimming tools! These are definitely some of the best pottery tools I’ve been lucky enough to test out. And I love that I can replace the heads in the future (love a more sustainable approach to pottery tools!) My top 5 (6 if you include my wire tool) go-to tools. 1. A thin, firm, and light recycled rib. This one is from Rebecca Morris and I’ve been in love with it since I got it. I rarely use any other straight rib. 2. A trimming tool for the bottoms of my pots. This one is from Monkey Stuff 3. The EDGY polymer rib. This thing has changed the game for my rims. Not only does it gently compress, it leaves the rims with a nice, smooth feel that holds up to me trimming. 4. A flexible metal rib. I’ve had this cheap one since I started and don’t see the need in investing in a “good one”, since they all are fairly the same, but that’s just my opinion. Save your money for other tools. 5. A piece of chamois cloth. I like the cloth from The Ceramic Shop. It comes in a bigger sheet and I cut it down into the size that works for me, and it lasts me all year. 6. This mudtools wire tool. It’s shorter than most, so I don’t have to wrap my fingers around the wire, which is never pleasant. I will cry if I lose this thing. That’s it! On occasion I might use a different tool for different pots, but for my mugs, these are my ride or die tools.
