El síndrome de Tourette es un trastorno neurológico que comienza generalmente en la infancia o adolescencia y se caracteriza por la presencia de tics motores y vocales. Los tics son movimientos o sonidos involuntarios, repetitivos y difíciles de controlar. Pueden ser: Motores: parpadeo frecuente, gestos faciales, movimientos bruscos de cabeza, hombros o extremidades. Vocales: carraspeo, gruñidos, chasquidos, repetición de palabras o sonidos. Los tics suelen variar en intensidad y frecuencia, empeoran con el estrés, la ansiedad o el cansancio, y disminuyen durante el sueño. No todas las personas con Tourette presentan coprolalia (decir groserías); este síntoma es poco común. El síndrome puede estar asociado a otros trastornos como TDAH, trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo (TOC) o ansiedad.
