How to teach "legs" trick 👇 OR the command of your choosing 👌 This is especially effective with the bigger dogs rather than the traditional "centre" trick 1️⃣ Lure your dog to the side of you. We started short at-home training sessions with Airplane (5-minutes at a time; 2-3 times a day) when he was 8-weeks-old! His name, sit, come, down, and stay were the first few commands we worked on. Puppy brains are little sponges at that age and training helps burn energy, and we used his regular kibble for training sessions early on so he didn’t get too chubby 😊. There are so many amazing videos and resources online, and it’s so fun to watch them connect the dots. Here are some clips of baby Airplane working on his first tricks. The most common command is also taught wrong most of the time. Many people associate Stay with a very pronounced hand and body gesture that makes it basically impossible to do anything else than maintain the Stay. Teaching it in this way has nearly 0 real benefits … because in most situations where you need your dog to stay you also want to do something with your hands (like pick up poop or tie your shoe). That’s why I teach this behavior independently of hand gestures right from the start. Instead of teaching the dog that the our hand is relevant, I make many little movements, and reward them in position. If you are generous in your reboarding, then you can actually advance this really quickly. Bonus points if your dog will also stay when you do a cartwheel like mine 😁😁

5 commands to teach your dog today Here’s a breakdown of 5 commands I believe every dog should know — and why they matter. ✅ 1. Sit It sounds obvious, but a solid sit is one of the most useful commands. Sit to greet visitors calmly Sit while waiting in queues Sit before crossing roads Sit as impulse control before food, games, or doorways ✅ 2. Down Everything above applies to “down” too — but it’s even more useful for relaxing. Use it at coffee shops, pub gardens, or parks Helps your dog switch off and chill Builds calmness and stillness ✅ 3. Place / Bed A command to send your dog to their bed or mat. Perfect for managing them at home Useful when guests or tradespeople visit Helps them settle while you eat or relax ✅ 4. Free / Release This ends the sit, down or place command. The dog stays in position until released Adds control and structure to every session Can also be used to safely exit the car or walk through doors ✅ 5.
