Yesterday we had a pretty special Wolfdog meetup! 🐺🎶 Three high content wolfdogs came to visit us, two of which are Maeve’s siblings! Boone, on the log in the back, is Maeve’s littermate brother from this year, and Arwen, standing behind Faelen in the video, is Maeve’s older sister from last year! Fun little games like this are always a great way to exercise the wolfdogs’ minds! They’re nothing if not dramatic, and practically seeing the thoughts go through their heads is hilarious to me. I often get asked if wolfdogs can be trained like dogs. This is complicated to answer. Do wolfdogs have the mental capacity to learn and understand what humans want of them? Absolutely, they’re incredibly intelligent and learn faster than any dog. Do they care what humans want from them? Absolutely not. They care about what’s in it for them in each moment. For this video, the obvious motivator was the bag of chicken in my pocket! Without that, they would completely brush me off and ignore my silly “commands.” So, no they cannot be trained like dogs, simply because dogs are hard wired to care about what their humans want, and 99% of wolfdogs are not (if you have or have seen the exception to this, you are a lucky outlier)! Many people run into problems when they cannot train their Wolfdog to go to the bathroom outside, to stop shredding the furniture, to stop digging or escaping or howling. And that’s one of the biggest mistakes people make- expecting wolfdogs to conform to the human world like dogs do. Wolfdog care is all about management. If they shred the house and pee everywhere despite intensive training? Then that’s why they need a secure outdoor containment when unsupervised. If they won’t stop digging or howling? Let them dig and howl (it’s who they are), while also asking yourself if these behaviors are a result of stress, lack of stimulation or proper space. If they won’t stop escaping? Improve your fencing so escape is never an option, and consider why they might feel the need to escape. While wolfdogs can certainly be guided and shown the behaviors you wish from them, at the end of the day they are mixed breed animals who vary immensely between individuals. It’s impossible to fully predict what behaviors they might show and how intense they might be. Having the capacity to change their (and your) surroundings to meet their needs (which often change over time) is perhaps the most crucial and yet often the hardest part of Wolfdog ownership.

Don’t judge a wolf so quickly. For anyone who thinks he is going to hurt me, he has proven time and time again that he won’t. Sure wolfdogs look scary. And they have the potential to do real damage, but the genetics behind the scene tell a different story. They would rather run away from a stranger. The only ones at risk are those that try to use compulsion, or physical abuse. Don’t steal from your wolfdog, don’t hurt your wolfdog, don’t agitate your wolfdog. Let your wolfdog have boundaries and listen to them. But also have consequences for said actions. If Kiba growls at a dog on my bed I don’t yell at him, I simply remove him from the bed and he must calm down in a crate. No reason to raise your voice at your wolfdog as they are incredibly intelligent and if you ever break their trust they will never forget.
