The trapezius. Aka the “stress shelf” where many of us casually store the weight of the world. This muscle has the most expansive origin of any muscle in the body. It begins at the base of your skull, travels all the way down to T12 of your spine, and reaches out to attach along part of the spine of the scapula and the lateral clavicle. With that kind of real estate, it wears a lot of hats. Elevating and depressing the shoulder blades. Assisting with neck extension, rotation, and lateral flexion. Upper, middle, and lower fibers all doing their own coordinated dance. We often hold stress here. Many of us unknowing let our shoulders creep up toward our ears, creating sustained and unneeded tension. Or if your head is forward for a while, the upper fibers of your traps are tensed in an elongated position trying not to let your head fall forward. Over time, that sustained effort can contribute to tension and, yes, those familiar tension headaches. Pause a few times today. Notice where your shoulders are living. Invite them down. Let your head stack gently over your spine instead of hovering out in front of it. If you are doing self massage, warm the area first. Broad, slow strokes before chasing specific tender spots. When you find a spot, stay patient. Slow, steady pressure tends to persuade tissue. Aggressive pressure tends to make it argue back. Even if it feels satisfyingly intense in the moment. e kind to your body! #musclemonday #seattlemassage #fluidfibersmassage #musclelearning #northseattlemassage

Tight traps are one of the most common complaints I hear from clients when they start working with me. But it’s not just that they’re annoying… they also steal your mental bandwidth and make it harder to push in the gym. So if you’re like most, you’ve tried stretching them. After all, they’re tight... So stretching must be the solution? Not so fast... Tightness is a sensation and to know how to change it, we need to understand the cause! In the case of tight traps, it’s usually posture that’s driving the tight sensation. With tight traps, most people have a forward head posture and compressed upper rib cage. This causes the traps to work harder and feel tight. You’ll see this present in one of two ways: 1. The upper rib cage rounds and the shoulders rise “up and over,” coming closer to the ears. 2. The shoulders stay low, but the head comes forward. In both cases, you need to mobilize the upper rib cage and reverse forward head posture to fix it. Here’s the framework: 1. Work the traps to bring the head back over the rib cage. 2. Use our breathing and deeper neck muscles to move the upper ribs. The result is a head that sits in a better posture over the rib cage and ribs that move better. This relieves the tight feeling. And once you’ve got that stacked position, it’s a lot easier to work the area in the gym without it tigthening up... That’s what our student Chris said... “I’ve done pain-free lateral raises for the first time in 5 years...” “I’ve never felt my head stack over my body during lifting like this... It’s a pretty cool feeling.” If you want the exact protocol we’ve used with 300+ students to fix posture and get rid of trap tightness, comment New Neck below.

This is not a "Knot", but you can still release it.... and here's how This is actually the junction where a few separate muscles meet. By the time we reach 35-50 years old, it has thickened and formed connective tissue adhesions in this area. We call these Fascia adhesions (you can learn more on our page about fascia) These Fascia adhesions, when tight, can cause: 🎯 Headaches 🎯 Neck Pain 🎯 Migraines 🎯 Shoulder Pain 🎯 Carpel Tunnel / Arm Pain 🎯 Upper Back Pain Your nervous system perceives tightness here because it's where tension collects from stress, poor posture, and repetitive movement. 🚫 Stretching won't fix it. Stretching alone won't release this junction because the issue isn't just muscle length. It's trigger point tension, adhesions, and neuromuscular dysfunction at that junction site. The trapezius is also your stress muscle. It holds tension like no other. When trigger points activate, they create a cascade of referred pain throughout your entire shoulder complex. What actually works? ✅ Myofascial Trigger Point release. ✅ Our Fascia-based treatment breaks up fascial restrictions and restores proper neuromuscular communication. ✅ A systematic assessment to find the root cause that created the myofascial trigger point This is why Fascia release works where massage/physio fails to get long-term results. So stop stretching and start releasing. This treatment method is only available at Premier League level and Fascia isn't taught to your Doctor or physio yet. 👉🏼 So What Next? ✅ Send us a message and we'll tell you exactly how can help you. 📢 Follow & Share to help others in pain #backpain #shoulderpain #neckpain #headaches #FasciaTherapy

Your traps aren’t weak. They’re tight because your structure is off. Open the lat. Lift the chest. Set the shoulder. Engage the lower traps. Restore the cervical curve. All you need is a wall. 1 minute reset. Save this and do it daily.

There’s one muscle most people have never heard of, but when it gets weak, it can lead to neck pain, poor posture, and restricted arm movement. It’s called the lower trapezius, and it plays a huge role in supporting your posture and keeping your shoulders moving properly. When it switches off, other muscles take over, and that’s when discomfort creeps in. Here’s a simple way to wake it back up: the Trap Raise. 🔸 Lie on your front (bed or mat) 🔸 Rest your forehead on one arm 🔸 Extend the other arm overhead, thumb pointing up 🔸 Gently draw your shoulder blade back and lift your arm towards the ceiling 🔸 Hold for a second, then lower slowly 👉 10 reps, 3 sets, 3 times a week Take your time with it. Smooth and steady beats fast and forceful. It might not look like much, but this small movement can make a big difference over time. 🔖 Save this so you can practise it later. Trapezius is a large, broad muscle that originates down the upper spine from the base of the skull down to the lower thoracic spine that fans out and attaches along the collar bone and shoulder blade. The trapezius muscle can be divided into three parts, upper trapezius, middle trapezius and lower trapezius. Having tight trapezius muscles is an increasingly common problem, typically caused by- . Posture: poor posture is the biggest cause for chronically tight trapezius muscles. We tend to spend more and more time on screens, sitting slumped over a desk or slouched on the sofa which leads to traps tightness Stress & Anxiety: we have a real tenancy to store tension in our shoulders which leads to tight trapezius muscles. When we feel stressed or anxious it’s common for our shoulders to tighten and gradually scrunch up towards our ears, and it’s trapezius that’s holding the majority of that tension Trigger Points: trapezius trigger points and muscle tightness go hand in hand. Small, tight nodules develop in the trapezius fascia which become hypersensitive. If you run your fingers over the back of your shoulder, just above your shoulder blade you may well be able to feel the knotted trapezius muscle under your fingers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #muscle#musclepain#trapezius #backpain#healing

Most ‘tight traps’ aren’t actually a trap problem. In clinic, I see this all the time. Trap tightness often comes from the neck or shoulder not doing their job. So your traps try to stabilise and support those joints. They feel tight… because they’re overworking. Stretching helps temporarily. Strength and control fix it. If your traps are always switched on, it’s probably not what you think. Save this and train the right thing.

Are your upper traps or your neck area always tight, and no matter how much you stretch them, they never release? Let me tell you something. Stretching is not going to get to the source of the problem. Let me explain the source so you can get rid of that problem altogether. Most people are upper trap dominant. That means they shrug a lot throughout the day. Because of that, the middle trapezius and lower trapezius are weak. Their job is to pull the shoulder blades back and down. As soon as you strengthen them, the upper traps start to relax. Here is what I want you to do. Take a simple resistance band. Start with the band above your head. Pull it open with straight arms until it reaches your collarbone. Hold it for 2 seconds, then return to the start. Perform 12 to 15 reps, or until you feel tension and mild fatigue in the middle of your back, just below your shoulder blades. This targets the lower trapezius. Next, using the same band, turn your palms up. Push your arms forward until you feel a slight stretch in the middle of your back. Then retract your shoulder blades and pull the band open to the middle of your chest. Hold for 2 to 3 seconds. Repeat this for 12 to 15 reps, until you feel fatigue or tension directly between your shoulder blades. This targets the middle trapezius. Do these exercises a couple of times per day or several times per week. Perform 2 sets of 12 to 15 reps for each movement. This will help put your shoulders in a better retracted and depressed position, take stress off the upper traps, reduce discomfort, improve function, and help you get better, not older. #Neckpain #neckpainrelief

🚨 Follow @drjoedamiani 🚨 The upper trapezius plays a big role in elevating the shoulder blade, but also it pulls down on the neck simultaneously. That's called the reverse action. So if we want to reduce tension into the neck. we can stretch this muscle, but furthermore, we can pin it down at the point of restriction and go deeper into the stretch. Give this a try hold it for 30 seconds and come back you can move the tool onto whichever tender point you find. 📽️: @drjoedamiani #traps #physicaltherapy #pt #fyp #explorepage

Stress triggers something called muscle guarding 🛡️ When you’re under pressure, your body subconsciously contracts certain muscles, and for a lot of people that tension settles in the traps… ➡️ Over time, constant contraction keeps the traps elevated and overactive. The shoulders start to look tight or bulky, the neck can appear shorter, and tension headaches become more common. 🙆♀️ Stretching may help temporarily, but if stress keeps reactivating the muscle, it tightens right back up. Even when you think you’re relaxed, the traps can still be firing. 💉✨ Tox in the traps helps calm that chronic contraction. Over the next few weeks, the shoulders soften, the neckline elongates, and many patients notice less overall tension. You don’t just feel it. You see it.

[4 moves start at 2:58] ⚠️Your upper traps aren’t the problem. They’re the alarm system. When your core, ribcage, and mid-back aren’t supporting your shoulder your upper traps step in to stabilize everything. So you stretch them. Massage them. Try to “relax your shoulders.” …and they just get tighter.😒 This happens because the real issue was never the traps. Once you identify the posture pattern causing them to overwork, everything starts to make sense. And that’s when real change finally happens.👏🏼 If you want to find out what’s actually causing your traps to look and feel big, DM or comment “ASSESS.” I’ll show you what shifts in your body are driving it and where to start fixing it.👌🏼 . . . #uppertraps #posture #posturecorrection #necktension #neckpainrelief

Tight traps are common, but they are not normal. At Ace, we see this every day, especially in high-performing adults who carry stress through their shoulders. Your upper traps compensate when: • Your mid-back is weak • Your shoulder blade isn’t moving well • Your neck posture is forward • Your nervous system is constantly “on” Stretching might feel good temporarily. But if you don’t address the driver, the tension comes straight back. That’s where targeted treatment like dry needling can help. It allows us to: — Decrease protective muscle guarding — Improve local blood flow — Restore proper scapular mechanics — Create space for strength work to actually stick Relief is step one. Rebuilding is step two. If your traps always feel tight, it’s worth asking why they’re working overtime in the first place. Book an assessment at Ace Toronto and let’s address the root — not just the symptom.
