Family Trees Exhibit! My Mother explored this unique use of the interior of the tree trunk to emphasize how the forest of trees is truly a family of tree species. Family Trees was my Mother's exploration of creating an accessible art form that exclaims that nature is just as close to us as the amazing people in our lives. Emilie experimented with multiple methods to create this vision. Each fallen trunk with their own unique burls, knots, and textures, was meticulously carved, caverned, and then shrouded with imagery. This exhibit at the Kourus Gallery in 2010 was stunningly beautiful, mysterious, evocative, and wondrous! @mikabrzezinski @knowyourvalue #powerofart #artandfamily #artandnature #womensculptors #familytrees Photos 1 and 2 by Kenneth George

Coast Redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens) have unique adaptations which allow them to regenerate new growth if disaster strikes. Basal burls are essentially big, knobby storage units that can resprout vigorously if the main trunk were to break in a storm, be severely burned, or decline in other ways. Redwoods can also form burls higher up along their trunk to help seal over wounds from previous injuries. Sometimes, these injuries can also result in what’s called a reiteration, where a redwood “clone” sprouts out, leaving a unique appearance on some ancient specimens. Sadly, these burls are sometimes poached and cut off by people wanting to sell their intricately complex wood. These wounds leave giant wounds on the tree which can weaken them structurally and leave them susceptible to pathogenic fungi and insect infestations. #trees #redwoods #redwood #sequoia #sequoiasempervirens #coastredwood #tree #burl #arborist #oldgrowth #burls #wood #plants #nativeplants #fire #regrowth

Ever noticed these knobbly, knotted lumps on tree trunks? 🌳 These are burls, formed when a tree experiences stress, injury, or infection, causing a hormonal imbalance—just like how humans can get spots from stress and hormones!! Inside, burls contain twisted, deformed grain patterns, making them highly prized by furniture makers, artists, and woodworkers for their beauty and uniqueness. The largest burl ever recorded was almost 8 meters across!

The strange shaped growth on this Blue Oak tree is called a Burl. Burls can form for a number of reasons, usually stemming from some form of environmental stress, injury or infection. After examining this particular tree, an old steel nail was imbedded near the burl. This may have triggered the burl growth many years ago. The inside of the burl is still wood, has simply grown in a deformed way that goes against the existing grain of the wood. Burls are often sought after by woodworkers for their complexity in grain. Have you ever seen a burl this big?!?

The result of one of the Hawthorn bonsai commissions that came in recently. The tree was originally collected on the Wedt coast of Wales many years ago and required a lot of heavy pruning (see last image) to remove long untapered branches. It’s also been lowered in its pot to improve the appearance of the base and been given some subtle carving to reduce the size of some ugly burls. Jez Shakerley, the current owner, managed to find a wonderful Gordon Duffet pot for the tree, I think it suits the tree really well! #bonsai #tree #hawthorn #artistsoninstagram

Learn more here 👀 *Torch NFS Buckeye Burl grows throughout most of the eastern US and in California on the Buckeye tree. It is relatively soft and light in weight. The Burl is incredibly beautiful - containing burl clusters, amazing color variation, and great character. Why are burls so valuable? Burl wood is generally more expensive than other types of wood because of its beauty and scarcity. Since burl wood only grows when trees form exterior burls, they are harder to find when compared to other types of wood.

Amazing how a small pin from a giant old tree can become the focus of a tiny pendant! #bigleaf 🍁 maple with opal sky! 🌌 . @derry_woodworking . . . #maplewood #woodenshapes #scrapwood #burls #burl #pendants #auroraboreal #necklaces #wearableart #artandwood #artsky

Gorgeous booby tree… Comment if you would like to know the ‘secret’ spot where you can find this beautiful tree. I’m a tree tragic, love to touch them, and be in their presence, and this one has been a favourite on our family bush walks. We affectionately named it the booby tree when our girls were young… and it’s perfect, right? It’s a Eucalyptus gum tree that has shed its bark and the trunk is smooth and cool to touch. They are often called Scribbly Gums due to the scribbly trails left by the burrowing larvae of the Scribbly Gum moth. This one doesn’t have many scribbles, but it has some gnarly burls! With respect to the traditional Gubbi Gubbi and Butchulla custodians on whose land this mother tree has grown. - Tracey x @_traceybailey

When your friends are aware of your addictions…. Brent has a tree service and is my local dealer. “Hey. Do you want some silver maple burls?” Oh, yeah!!!! 24” bar on the Husqvarna 385XP. I crosscut close to the burls, then ripped to take the burls off the logs. I had a ripping chain on, but a sharp x-cut chain woulda done fine. ISOTunes kept me tuned in. I like the muffs for chainsaw work. What’s this stuff gonna become? Stay tuned @husqvarnausa @isotunes #burls #mapleburl #chainsaw #cuttingwood #woodworking
