Get to know a neat tree: Utah Juniper! These kinds of videos are so fun for me to make, I really should do more. Something v satisfying about making something cool out of wood from a tree I’m nerding out about. I really should start doing more of these again. #trees #woodworking #wood

Map of Official State Trees: Indiana’s Tulip Tree! These trees are really great and neat, though I kinda wish it wasn’t on the map three times. But for now let’s just enjoy it! (Reminder: this is a re-airing of a series that premiered on TikTok a few years ago, but never made it to instagram in its entirety so it’s finally making it here now.) #trees #woodworking #treemap #statetreemap

Map of Official State Trees: New Mexico’s Piñon Pine! This is a tree near and dear to my heart. Plucking a fresh pine nut off one of these trees and popping it in your mouth is one of life’s true joys. One of the best trees on the map, no question. #trees #woodworking #treemap

Shoutout, of course, to @geodesaurus - if you somehow aren’t watching Spooky Lake Month, go do that right now! Her episodes are all one million times more interesting than my attempt at a spooky lake video here lol. But anyway, hope you are all still enjoying the spheres as much as I am. These are v fun to me. #woodworking #wood #lakes #saveourgreatsaltlake

When you look at a board, you’re often seeing a mix of sapwood and heartwood — and how much of each you get depends entirely on the species. Some woods produce a lot of heartwood. Others have much more sapwood. And many fall somewhere in between. Heartwood is the inner, older wood formed as the tree matures. It’s often darker, more stable, and naturally more resistant to insects and decay. Examples of species where heartwood is commonly seen: Walnut – dark, rich heartwood with pale sapwood contrast Cherry – heartwood deepens beautifully over time Red Oak & White Oak – strong, durable heartwood Red Birch (from Yellow Birch) – limited heartwood, but prized for its warm tone Some species, like maple and birch, don’t always yield large amounts of heartwood — which is why boards with strong heartwood color can be harder to come by. You may also hear about heart pine (often called heart pine vs. hard pine). That refers to the dense heartwood from old-growth southern yellow pine — beautiful material, but not something we carry. Bottom line: Color alone doesn’t tell the whole story, and every species behaves a little differently. Knowing whether you’re working with sapwood, heartwood, or a mix of both helps you choose the right material for the job. 👉 There’s a lot more to this — check the caption details and let us know if you want a part two.

Last summer I was attempted to mill some slabs of a cottonwood tree. The pull cord cover screws loosened off and rattled around until the cover hit the flywheel fins. #stihl #woodworking #mountains #canada🇨🇦 #log

Shasta Unveiled (2025) - this piece unintentionally reminds me of driving down to California from the North. It feels as if Mount Shasta pops up out of nowhere on that drive, emerging as a sentinel over the relatively flat surrounding area. It grabbed my attention from miles away when we visited in 2023 and truly captivated me as we got closer and closer... One of the many times I had to hand over driving privileges to my wife because I tend to get hypnotized driving through the mountains (true story 😅). Although this artwork is based on the view from the South, it still reminds me of that specific feeling. Similar to the feeling coming through Calgary and seeing the awe-inspiring presence of the Rockies start to emerge and beckon me closer. A feeling of a homecoming... A flood of awe, wonder and childlike excitement at the sheer beauty, power and majesty of the mountains calling me in. Without a background or frame, this piece invokes a similar feeling. As if the mountain emerges from the wall and beckons us closer to enjoy the natural contours, carved details and incredible wood grain. This piece is available for sale, please DM with inquiries ✌️ . . . #naturalinterior #mountainlovers #woodart #naturaldesign #lovemountains

Roots are neat and so are mycorrhizal fungi! Extremely neat! Also just keep repeating “we do not live in a zero sum world” every day if you can. As Robin Wall Kimmerer says, all flourishing is mutual! #trees #woodworking #wood #nature
