I never knew some tomatoes don’t grow in the ground, but on trees. Did you? 🍅 Growing a tree tomato, also known as tamarillo, can be a unique and exciting experience for any gardener. They don’t grow in the ground - but on trees! Tamarillo trees are native to the Andes Mountains in South America, where they have been cultivated for centuries. Even though they’re known as tree tomatoes, they are not related to the common tomato plant. Instead, they are part of the Solanaceae family, which includes potatoes, peppers, and eggplants. They can grow up to 20 feet tall, but they are often pruned to keep them at a manageable height for harvesting. And the fruit of a tamarillo tree is egg-shaped and can range in color from red, orange, and yellow to purple or almost black, depending on the variety. With a little patience and care, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious and nutritious tree tomatoes straight from your own garden.

I fell in love with tree tomatoes many years ago after trying them in Hawaii. Fast forward to now, we are not only selling these fresh fruits but getting to experience them through the rich cultural lens of people from Colombia and Ecuador who come to visit the fruit stand. We’ve heard countless stories of those reliving their childhood or who are so excited to see the fruit fresh in the US. Here’s a recipe that we decided to try after @lightingblooms inspired us this weekend when her and her mother stopped in. Ingredients: 3 tree tomatoes 12 oz coconut milk 2 tbsp honey 1 cup ice Directions: Cut tree tomatoes in half and scoop out into blender. Add milk, honey, and ice. Blend until smooth. Option to strain out the seeds. Tree tomatoes have an amazing flavor that’s much stronger and more acidic than a regular tomato. We wait until they get soft to eat then cut in half and scoop out. We don’t eat the skin due to its bitter flavor and thick texture. Stop by the fruit stand this weekend to pickup fresh tree tomatoes ➡️ 🧡open Friday-Sunday 🧡10am-5pm 🧡10900 sw 48th st Davie, FL 33328

Tamarillo or tree tomato is one of my favorites! To me it tastes like a savory melon with jelly seeds. The flavor is very rich and complex and mildly sweet. I found these at San Felipe de Neri market in Panamá City. I found them on a trip to Costa Rica as well, it’s seems that it’s not too difficult to find them in Central America! #treetomato #tamarillo

Tamarillo- The “Tree Tomato” is not actually a tomato but rather a different fruit altogether. They are often confused with regular tomatoes, but it belongs to a different plant species and is grown on a tree or shrub rather than a vine. Here’s everything you need to know about tree tomatoes (tamarillos): 1. Appearance: Tree tomatoes are typically egg-shaped or oval fruits, and they come in various colors, including red, orange, and yellow. The skin is smooth, and the flesh inside can range from yellow to deep red. 2. Origin: Tree tomatoes are native to South America, particularly in the Andes region, and are widely grown in countries like Ecuador and New Zealand. 3. Growth Habit: The tree tomato plant is a small to medium-sized tree or shrub, which is quite distinct from the low-growing tomato plants. 4.Taste and Use: Tree tomatoes have a unique, slightly tangy and sweet flavor. They are often eaten fresh, sliced or scooped out of the skin. They can also be used in salads, salsas, or made into jams and sauces. 5. Nutritional Value: Tree tomatoes are a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as dietary fiber. They are low in calories and are considered a healthy addition to the diet. 6. Uses: They are used in both sweet and savory dishes. They are used to make beverages, chutneys, and desserts. #tamarillo #treetomato

Never knew tree tomatoes were this good! Native to the Andes, these tangy little fruits (aka tamarillos) taste like a mix of passionfruit, tomato & kiwi. In places like Rwanda, Uganda, and New Zealand, tamarillos are used to make juice, jam, desserts, and even savory sauces for meat.😋🍅 #TreeTomato #Tamarillo #FoodFacts #TravelEats #NatureLovers
