However, many people make a mistake when they use too much weight, leading to shoulder shrugging during each rep. This can reduce the effectiveness of the exercise by shifting the focus to your shoulders instead of your triceps. 👉 Why is this a problem? Shrugging your shoulders causes scapular elevation, which leads to using more of the shoulder muscles (up to 60%), leaving your triceps only around 40% engaged. This not only hinders your tricep gains but could also increase the risk of injury. ✅ The solution: To really target your triceps, reduce the weight so you can perform controlled reps. Keep your shoulder blades pulled down and locked in place throughout the movement. Also using too much shoulders and chest when the goal is to isolate the triceps (however if your goal is to target your chest that’s fine).
