tw: trichotillomania. this is hard for me to talk about. i started splitting my ends when i was 10 and it developed into a full blown obsession with ripping my hair for hours on end. i remember getting yelled at in class because i'd be staring at my hair. i'd get fixated on coarse, wiry hairs and cannot refrain from splitting an end when i see one. i was going through a lot an i only realize now at 32 that this was a coping mechanism to numb out. i could tune out the entire world and focus on one thing. everything else faded away. having trichotillomania has had devastating effects on my self confidence because of hair loss. i've struggled with bald patches and thinning hair lines my whole life. every day, things get better and i become more aware and able to stop. but if i'm being honest, its still a coping mechanism i do incompletely unconsciously. i don't know if anyone will relate to this, but i know how embarrassed i've been for the last 22 years with this and i shouldn't be. we shouldn't be ❤️ #trich #trichotillomania #adhd #ocd

Trichotillomania, often referred to as hair-pulling disorder, is a mental health condition marked by a compulsive urge to pull out one’s hair, resulting in noticeable hair loss. Classified under obsessive-compulsive and related disorders in the DSM-5, trichotillomania manifests through persistent hair pulling that leads to significant distress or impairment in daily functioning. Individuals with trichotillomania frequently target hair on their scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and other parts of the body. The disorder typically begins in late childhood or early adolescence and can vary in its course, being either chronic or episodic. The exact cause of trichotillomania remains unclear, though it is believed to involve a complex interplay of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors. Treatment for trichotillomania often includes cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly habit-reversal training, which helps individuals recognise and change their hair-pulling behaviours. In some cases, medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are prescribed to help manage the symptoms. #trichotillomania #trich #hair #mentalhealth #psychiatry #psychiatrist

Impulsive Ashley prevailed and I box dyed my hair today 🙈 And for those asking about the hair pulling… yes, wearing wigs helps during the day. When the wig is “on,” I don’t pull. But nighttime is different. When the wig comes off. It’s when I’m winding down — feeding the baby, reading, watching a show. I’m aware I’m doing it… but I also sort of zone out. It soothes my nervous system in a way that’s really difficult to replace. Things that tend to increase my pulling: stress, nerves, grief, lack of sleep, poor nutrition. Things that help: movement, better sleep, nourishing my body, meditation, staying on top of deficiencies. When I’m low on something, I feel it (i.e. vitamin d, iron, etc)… and my pulling reflect it. And while sweet Benny is an answer to our deepest prayers… a baby also comes with worry, broken sleep, and inevitable exhaustion. Two things can be true: it’s worth it. and it’s hard. If you’re navigating trich, or any coping pattern that feels hard to untangle, you’re not alone 🤍 #trich #trichotillomania #hairpulling

Whether you suffer from a more traditional hair loss condition, or you have a hair pulling condition, I see you. You’re beautiful, and you’re so much more than your hair. I have trichotillomania, a condition that makes me reach for the hair on my scalp and pull it out, strand by strand. Why? For me, it serves as a nervous system regulator. It keeps me calm and focused, and can be a completely subconscious behavior. It started when I was a kid, and my bald spots were first spotted by my hair dresser. She called over my mom: “there’s something WRONG with her hair.” I lied. I hid the condition for years without understanding it. Then I learned to manage, and I’m a peer coach, helping others manage their hair pulling. When and how did you learn Skin Picking was an actual, diagnosable disorder? Our CEO @laurenmckeaney will go first! After struggling silently for 27 years, thanks to the DSM-5s inclusion of this OCD related Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior in 2013, Lauren was diagnosed with Dermatillomania aka Skin Picking Disorder. But her work was not finished. After discovering the general lack of knowledge, research and awareness surrounding Dermatillomania, she developed the Picking Me Foundation in 2017 to create a much-needed #nonprofit for this lesser-known disorder! What gives me the right.... Well, nothing probably, but I do want to spread awareness of trichotillomania. It’s a condition that affects 1 IN 20 PEOPLE but nobody seems to know what it is. It’s a mental health condition that causes the individual to compulsively pull their hair, this can be from their eyelashes, eyebrows, scalp, facial hair, or anywhere on the body. So, it causes... bald patches. Eyebrowlessness. No eyelashes. And SHAME! At @habitaware we work to create resources for people with trich because you deserve more. You deserve to HAVE resources, you deserve to know that you’re not alone, and that there’s hope.
