📍Habaraduwa Turtle Hatchery There are many turtle hatcheries in Sri Lanka, and we were advised to visit the one by Habaraduwa beach. The hatchery is a building opening onto the ocean shore with tanks inside and educational posters. The tanks housing the large turtles were quite small. We were told that these turtles had been trapped in plastic or caught in fishermen’s nets and would be released once healthy. The center also collects turtle eggs, as many beaches are in poor condition and locals used to poach them. The center releases the baby turtles into the wild and you can participate for a fee. We opted for a ‘bucket’ of turtles, probably the cutest activity I’ve ever done – you can see our bucket with baby turtles above as well as protected nesting site. Baby turtles not released by tourists are released later by the center staff. Donations and fees are said to benefit the turtles. Although promoted as an ethical activity, I’m not convinced it’s 100% conservational (it could be improved to benefit turtles more), but it does have some educational value. Sadly, we saw visitors interacting with turtles in the tanks despite signs prohibiting it, and the staff did not intervene. It’s also unclear where the visitor fees go, and the ‘turtle release’ activity is clearly a tourist attraction. However, I hope these turtles have a better chance of survival than if they were left to face humans and natural predators alone. #purpurpurpur_guides🔎🌎

🐢Releasing newly hatched baby turtles was the best thing we did in Costa Rica & something I’d had on my bucket list for a while. 🚙We found a turtle hatchery a 45 minute drive from where we were staying in Tamarindo. I had been messaging them everyday to see if they were doing a release. (They were very patient with my texts & the nicest people). 😳On our very last day they said they were releasing 2 so we drove straight over. While we were there another 58 hatched. We literally couldn’t believe it! 💚For a $10 donation per person you could release some turtles yourself. Some were still very sleepy & needed a little tummy rub to wake them up & get them going. 🥲It was just an incredible experience, made even more so by the beautiful sunset. I couldn’t help shed a tear or 10 when they were all going down to the sea. 🌅The ones that survive (& I’m telling myself every single one did), will return to this exact spot in 20 years. All the turtles here are rescued - either sick or injured. The hatchery takes care of them and keep them until they recover and are then released into the ocean. On our recent trip to Sri Lanka, we visited a sea turtle hatchery and rescue centre. My husband and I visited it before back in 2017 so we were excited to take our 2 your old back with us this time. The rescue centre has a variety of turtles of different breeds and ages. While the hatchery itself was not much to look at, the experience of releasing the baby turtles into her ocean was one that was definitely worth the visit. 📍Besant Nagar Hatchery Olive Ridley turtle lay eggs between December to March And the hatchlings are released from March to Mid May at Besant Nagar Hatchery around 6-6.30pm Please call SSTCN ( student sea turtle conservation network) to check if there are hatchlings for release on the day you want to visit . This is a free of charge activity and they allow visitors to only see the hatchlings from a distance and spread more awareness about turtle conservation. You CANNOT touch it or use flash to take pictures. Please keep this in mind before visiting 🙏 You can also volunteer at SSTN. they conduct weekend night walks to collect eggs .
