Footage taken this morning at the hatchery 🤩 A berried hen releasing her larvae — something that usually happens at night 🌓 By lifting her tail and fanning her pleopods, she sends thousands of larvae into the water 🦞 It took over an hour to collect, count and transfer these little ones into the larval rearing tanks 😮‍💨 They were then fed and left to settle into their new temporary homes. 🦞This work is all about protecting the species. In the wild, very few larvae survive (approximately 1 in 20,000) — we give them a better start before releasing them back into the sea 🌊 🦞Lobster hatcheries can improve survival rates up to 1000 times compared to the wild. 🦞 We’re NOT fish farming, this is marine conservation. Artificial breeding of salmon is a hatchery technique used to increase fish populations and support commercial aquaculture. Instead of allowing salmon to spawn naturally in rivers, mature males and females are carefully selected during spawning season. Need some good news for your Friday? 👀📰 A new facility at our Logan Fish Hatchery was recently completed that will allow us to produce additional warmwater fish species to be stocked around the state! 🎉 This new part of the hatchery will specialize in raising cool and warmwater sportfish species, including channel catfish, walleye and wipers — a hybrid species that is a cross of a white bass and a striped bass. The hatchery will continue to produce rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, June sucker, green sucker and woundfin.
