If you want to take your editing to the next level, you need to learn how to use masks in Adobe Lightroom. It can make such a big difference and is an extremely powerful way of adding directional lighting and glow to your photo, to get the perfect sunset look. This photo was taken just before sunset and the trees filtered the rays perfectly onto the ferns. We knew we had to make the most of the ferns in this photo and to get the look just right, here’s what we did: 1️⃣ Small radial masks for the eye Always recommend doing this for pet photos so that their eyes sparkle and grab attention. 2️⃣ Large radial mask directly over the light source Since the sun was off screen in this photo we added it to the top corner and increased the brightness and warmth. 3️⃣ Use a Brush mask to darken the underside You want the scene to look natural and the best way to do this is to accentuate all shadows in the right spots, which is usually the underside of your pet, under their chin etc. 4️⃣ Brighten the subject using a subject selection mask. This one is fairly straight forward. You want your subject to stand out. Be very careful and increase the brightness only slightly as this can quickly start looking fake. 5️⃣ Add a linear mask to darken the opposite corner. Again, in pursuit of ensuring that the photo looks natural and the light rolls off naturally, we want to darken the parks of the photo which aren’t receiving any light. 6️⃣ Finally, the most important part of this edit is using the color range mask to target specific hues of greens (the ferns) and increasing the warmth and decreasing clarity to get a nice evening glow on them. 🔥 Save this for your next Lightroom session and share this with a friend who is learning how to edit pet photos. #dogsofvancouverbc #lightroomediting #sunsetphotographs #petphotoshoot #localphotographer #madewithlightroom #lightroommobile #editingphotos #dogphotographer

Here’s a quick run through of my favourite car photography technique while I was teaching my mate @shootwithaidan 😊 Shooting in dark conditions with a camera that doesn’t have the best low light performance (like my a6700) is pretty tough at the best of times, but this technique allows you to get super clean night shots with any camera! You just need a tripod and to turn on the 2 second self timer mode on your camera, then follow the walkthrough in the video! Steal these Lightroom settings if you want your photos to feel more like stories than snapshots. This is the exact edit I used to give this Paris street photography shot its cinematic mood. - Tone curve: lifted the midtones while protecting the shadows, keeping the depth of the original moment. - Masking: highlighted the subject with Lightroom masks, then added a vignette to guide focus. - Color grading: enhanced tones and contrast to create warmth, atmosphere, and that cinematic edge. I photographed this vintage car racing past the Eiffel Tower in Paris, chasing that fleeting energy you only find on the streets. My inspiration was to freeze a moment of motion and romance, then use Lightroom to bring it closer to how it felt to be there. Detailed Masking Tutorial 👇 Save this reel for later. 📍 Mask 1 - Linear Gradient (Darken the road leading into the image) -Exposure -Highlights +Contrast Mask 2 - Select Object (In this example the car but you could translate this to people etc) -Exposure -Whites +Contrast -Temperature Mask 3 - Linear Gradient + Subtract Object (Darkening the sky to emphasise the subject) -Highlights -Exposure Mask 4 - Radial Gradient (Adding some detail into the subject) +Clarity -Blacks Mask 5 - Linear Gradient (Further darkening the road) -Exposure -Shadows Mask 6 - Linear Gradient + Subtract Object (Darkening background + adding warmth) -Shadows +Contrast +Temperature -Saturation Last step was to colour grade and do any final edits to the image. Since sharing a few editing reels I’ve been flooded with requests on Masking and how I approach using masks in Adobe Lightroom.
